iPhone 8/Plus iPhone Warm, But Not Hot

Hi,

Quick question; when I use my iPhone 8 Plus for basic tasks such as viewing MacRumors on Safari, it sometimes feels warm in my hands. It is never hot, no temperature warnings have been displayed, apps are not crashing, the latest version of iOS is installed, and battery life seems unaffected. According to a Genius at the Apple Store who looked at my phone, he said that this is normal for Plus size iPhones as the logic board and battery are larger.

I have had an iPhone since the 4 came out, but this is my first Plus size iPhone. Is this normal? Does this sound about right?

No doubt normal.

The only way your 8+ can shed heat is through the body of the phone so it will warm up. Both the cpu and backlighting will cause it to get warm.

Enjoy your phone.
 
While feeling things heat up a bit under load isn't unusual, it can be a bit unusual if it happens when doing fairly light things (like just browsing the web) and/or when doing things that typically never resulted in that.
 
Thank you for all of your help. Just to provide some more details; with the exception of the built in weather app, none of my apps are set to ‘Always’ in regards to location access. Additionally, while all of my apps are allowed to refresh in the background, no specific app appears to be running for more than a few minutes according to the phone’s battery usage information.

I also find that sometimes the phone comes out of my pocket slightly warm, but I’m going to blame that on a tighter pocket fit from pigging out on Thanksgiving! Apple ran their diagnostics on my phone and nothing came back as failing, so maybe I am more sensitive than other people. I am the kind of person who could be sweating in a meat locker.

Whatever the cause, based on everything you guys have said here, this seems normal.
 
Is it possible it gets warmer than my 7 did because the phone is made out of glass as opposed to aluminum?

Here are some possible reasons why it might be warm while doing simple stuff like surfing on safari.

1. It’s a new phone, still indexing in the background.
2. it’s not in a case, so you notice it more.
3. Rogue app, or a bug is causing your processor to act up, draining your battery and generating heat.

It should not be running noticeably warmer than any of the pervious iPhone. I am replying to you on my iPhone XR(also has a glass back), and I am not feeling any perceivable heat on my iPhone at all. Granted that I do have a case on my iPhone XR, as I had with all my previous iPhone.

I can say the iPhone XR is noticeably cooler than my iPhone 7 plus(aluminium back) and my iPad(2017 version), this is especially noticeable while running intensive apps, like gaming.

If anything your iPhone 8 plus should run cooler than your iPhone 7 if both have their processors taxed the same way.

Thank you, MacLappy. I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye on it. I met with another Genius at the Apple Store yesterday who also said it was “normal, to be expected, and nothing to worry about.”
 
Here’s an update: I had Apple replace my phone on Saturday and this one gets to about the same temperature, maybe slightly cooler. I am beginning to assume that it gets warmer because it has a larger battery than the non Plus size models, and that I am more sensitive to that than most people.

What is interesting though is that the battery life on the new phone is significantly better than my last one, despite it operating at 100% capacity.
 
Any cause for concern if iPhone 8 Plus gets warm during extended videos and sometimes lags on the video webpage?
