iPhone - will Apple fix or replace my phone

Hey guys,

Sorry to make my first post asking a question but I plan to contribute lots to the forum once I become more familiar with it.

Today, for no apparent reason, the bottom-third of my iPhone has stopped working. It works visually, but when I attempt to touch the screen it won't register the pressure of my finger. Therefore I'm not able to "Slide to unlock" or use any of the 4 dock buttons.

I've had my iPhone since September 2007 so it's still covered by the 1 year Apple limited warranty. I've never unlocked my iphone and I have a contract with AT&T, though I have jailbroken it a few times in the past.

I've done all the basic things I can think of to fix it such as:

• Restart,
• reset,
• restore,
• and charge...

My plan is to send it off to apple, or take it to a local Apple store. Though I don't know if I should wait or not. Because I know that the 3G iPhone, or at least a new version of the iPhone, will be talked about at the WWDC and possibly released.

Anyways enough gabbling, now that you have some background here's my concern / question.

First, what do you think Apple will do-fix or give me a new iPhone? I've read that people with similar problems which have been sent to be fix, have gotten back a new iPhone all together.

Now if they actually do give me a new iPhone do you think it will be one of the new iPhones... assuming they are released at the WWDC. Since they have stopped production of the old iPhones, or so I've read.

All-in-all what should I do, wait to see what is released at the WWDC and try my luck at just getting a new iPhone or just send it off to be it fixed because I wouldn't have a shot at getting one.

in all likelihood they will first try to see if they can fix it. If that does not work they'll give you a replacement which will either be brand new, or more likely, a refurb.

There is no way that they will give you an iPhone v.2. Even if they have stopped producing them, they still have enough in stock to replace any phones that needs to be replaced. I've even read somewhere that they keep stock of all old models, whether computer, ipod, on in this case, iphone for up to several year. My suggestion is that you either call applecare or take the phone in to a store and have them look at it.

I'm curious though; if you can't slide to unlock, how do you know that you can't press any of the dock icons?

When I restart my phone it goes to the home-screen. Therefore it's not at the locked state. And from this point I can still call people using the SMS feature's call function.

If you doubt they would give up a new iPhone do you think they would allow some sort of trade in fee, like a hundred or so. Probably not, but thought I would ask.

no, they will not allow you to trade in your old phone for the new version, unless you are within the 14 days return policy in which case you can pay the restocking fee and buy the new phone.

as long as u restore it they wont know. my 8g was jailbroke and i restored it and sent it in cause i could not slide to answer sometimes and they didnt try to fix crap. i had a new one back in 3 days. an apple employee told me that are giving them away like hotcakes. send one in get a new refurb back. i know it wasnt new but looks like it is. just restore and take to apple store. try it after monday because they will be so consumed with the new iphone they wont have time to deal with us version 1 people.
