IPhone will no longer backup to Mac

My iPhone (iOS 16.4.1) will not backup to my MacBook Pro anymore.
I still run this Mac on Mojave for reasons of applications that would no longer work when i update to the latest software.
I get this window in iTunes when i try to connect:

but i am running the latest iOS version (iOS 16.4.1) so there is nothing to update.

What can i do? I have always been able to make backups when running older iOS versions

Install the update so your Mac can talk to the iPhone.

(It's weird having an older iTunes telling you to update the phone's software, when iOS itself tells you it is up to date.
It feels like it is going to overwrite it with an older version)

If your Mac says that a software update is required to connect to iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

You might see this message if the software on your Mac needs to be updated to support the newer software on your iPhone or iPad.

It's not really an update for the phone itself. Its more like a "driver" so iTunes can communicate with your phone.
