I haven’t been following the leaks and rumours, but what are the chances of Apple switching to USB-C in the next iPhone?

Just sounds absurd how we’ve had 3 generations of “Pro” iPhones and yet Apple is still sticking with the Lightning port that has a much slower file transfer speed.

The iPad Pro took 3 generations to finally switch to USB-C, why can’t the iPhone do the same?

MagSafe is slowly replacing Lightning as the new source of MFi certified accessories. And I think MagSafe has more potential for fancier and more expensive accessories for Apple to leech on.

Yep, this is definitely happening, 2-3 years away from going portless.

considering WIFI6 availability, I don't see them investing any serious amount of RND money into physical data transfer.

This is nothing but pure evil moneymaking move from Apple to sell their outdated, inferior and junk USB 2.0 specced Lightning port. On USB-C, Apple won’t get royalties from cable and accessories manufacturers.

Apple apologists can dance naked all day long justifying Apple’s decision on continuing usage of lightning port, I won’t change my opinion.

Yea I can see that happening.

But would a digital data transfer be as reliable and easy to use as a USB-C port if we’re transferring 20GB+ files?

I’m already experiencing random bugs with AirDrop every now and then.

I agree. But isn’t that what MagSafe is for going forward? To make up for the loss of royalties from Lightning if one day Apple decides to remove it.

So what’s stopping Apple from removing Lightning in the iPhone 14?

The problem with MagSafe is efficiency. I really like the concept, but wasting 25% power is just a no from me.

Apple. :p And the EU, if they want to sell it there, as they will likely in the future require a USB-C port. Apple can get around it with Magsafe though, but Lightning has to go (Or the phone have 2 connectors....).

There are too many reasons against switching to USB-C, all of them being non-consumer friendly. That said, it shouldn't be impossible to just improve the Lightning port transfer speeds... give it some cliché marketing name like Lightning Pro, Lighting Max, whatever, I'm sure Apple is creative enough to come up with something

Good point. That improved Lightning port supporting USB 3.0 speed already exists since the iPad Pro from 2015. This sounds more likely than USB-C unfortunately.

USB-C being non-consumer friendly ?

LMAO WTF? Do you even read your own sentence? Tell me one of the many reasons why USB-C is non consumer friendly. It better be a good one.

What I meant is Apple has too many reasons for them to not switch to USB-C. Apple is against switching, and all of their reasons are for their benefit, and are anti-consumer.

Apple did say the Lightning connector was good for a decade. This year is a decade. So it will be interesting to see if Apple does anything different for the iPhone 14. Apple also said how they were numbering OS X versions was good for about a decade. A decade later they changed the numbering to starting at 11 and going on from there.

I think a port-less iPhone is like saying wireless charging. Neither literally means what comes to mind when you say wireless charging or a port-less iPhone.

They might introduce a smart connector like they have on the iPad Pro models. They can't completely go port-less without a solution for those who only can use a wired CarPlay connection. Something like a smart connector would allow for using wired CarPlay. Smart connector would also allow for charging and very fast file transfer off the phone. A smart connector would allow Apple to continue on with their MiFi program for the iPhone.

The EU proposal will backfire if it ever gets adopted. The legislation only applies to devices that are capable of being charged via wire. Apple will remove the Lightning port so the legislation won't apply. And we thought we had it "bad" with Lightning?

If you have CarPlay, Apple will probably introduce some wired-to-wireless adapter costing $249. Apple wins either way.

There is going to be a lot of upset people when this happens lol.

Be interesting to see what they come up with.

Don’t worry the IPhone 14pro and ProMax will have USB-C it’s been confirmed from an employee from Foxconn ?
