iPhone Without Data Plan

My RAZR broke so I decided to get an iPhone. From what I understand, the $30 per month additional data plan is not optional and I am forced to buy that. I don;t need a data plan. All I want is calling and texting, and for internet I'll use WiFi. I'm considering buying an unlocked iPhone 2G from eBay and getting a basic 450 minute plan with texting but without the data plan, and using the sim card in the unlocked iPhone. Would this work? I want to make sure because I'm buying soon.

A data plan is optional. The only requirement is that you either refresh your current plan for 3 years (or is it 2 years in the US?) or get another plan (any plan) for 2-3 year contract.

Hmm, on the AT&T website it says "Please note: Data plan for iPhone is required for the life of your iPhone service and cannot be removed in the future."

Huh... okay then. I thought Rogers in Canada and AT&T in the US had the same policies but I guess I'm wrong.

If you buy the phone from them the data plan will be manditory.
If you buy one off craigslist/ebay and insert your sim they can not force you to get the data plan. The phone was not subsidized.

My wife has had an iphone on a regular AT&T plan for over a year. I turned off the the Edge connection so we will not get charged for data. The phone shows up on our account, but no notice from AT&T.

I would advise to buy phone second hand and activate a line with features that you want and get a free phone, you will be in contract anyway.

Then put in the SIM later. **just make sure that you turn off the edge connection with BossPrefs or SBSettings to not have the phone connecting to data. you will be charged.

or you can get rid of edge or 3g by disabling the APN by installing this profile from www.unlockit.co.nz

make sure you access it from your iphone on wifi... it is a completely different site on your iphone then on your computer...you will see what i am talking about when you go on the site from your iphone.

its a lot easier and you dont have to jailbreak
