I heard from my friend that there are no EDGE networks in the UK with most if not all carriers favouring 3G. I then thought, wait no EDGE, how will the iPhone work then?

It doesn't support 3G and no EDGE so what.....we're stuck with GPRS (56K speeds) or Wi-Fi?

Pls tell me there is an EDGE network in the UK.

sorry to sound so ignorant,, my phone has edge,, but i have always wondered what the hell that is...anyone care to explain?

It's all good.....
Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE) - The final evolution of data communications within the GSM standard. Based on 8PSK modulation, EDGE provides 3G packet data throughput on GSM networks, and uses a new modulation scheme to enable data throughput speeds of up to 384kbit/s using existing GSM infrastructure.
In short, you get what you're looking for faster. :D
