iPhone iPhone won't change wallpaper, apps out of folders

Need a little help. Downloaded a Winterboard theme called Weather Widget Lockscreen. Installed it and it worked fine. At the time I didn't have a way to connect to my iPhone to change the wallpaper on the theme. So…I downloaded iFile and managed to get an image on to the phone through Dropbox and the DCIM folder.

iFile was able to place the file from there, but the directions as to where the background file was located did not have the correct folder. I took a look at the html file and found that it was linking to /var/mobile/Library/Springboard/Converted-LockBackground.jpg

I renamed that file, moved my background file in and renamed it to the correct name. Resprang and all was fine. The image was scrunched though so I replaced it and moved my old one to the trash and resprang again.

Then my problem. I now have a solid black background on both the lockscreen and the springboard. I can make changes and set both the lockscreen and the springboard to any image, but it reverts. On top of that the icon of almost EVERY app I have came out of the folders I had them in and are littered across a few pages of the springboard (I had the maximum number of pages), but a few icons on each and the last page full of several folders of icons.

Lastly, I noticed in Settings>Notifications that a great deal of my apps have dissappeared from both the in and out of notification center lists.

My iPhone is functioning in every way except these problems. All my other tweaks/apps (including Winterboard) continue to function. Really trying to avoid having to restore here. At this point all I have done is put the original Converted-LockBackground.jpg back and uninstalled the Weather Widget Lockscreen theme.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can fix this?

It occurred to me after I posted this that this might be a permissions issue. So, I pulled out my 3GS which I had actually jailbroke before my i5, installed iFile and compared permissions on the Springboard folder and the files inside. The Springboard folder permissions were off on the i5. Changed them to match the 3GS which only had Cydia and iFile installed. Rebooted, and the lockscreen had wallpaper. Checked my settings and changed homescreen and lockscreen wallpaper and it took.

My notifications center still has apps missing so I guess that's my next project, but it seems it was a permissions issue for the wallpaper.

EDIT: HA! OK, seems like as I'm opening apps I'm being reasked to allow the apps in the NC, which is then adding them. Whew! Looks like whatever happened has been fixed.

My themes don't come with wallpapers either, is their a free alternative to ifile so I can do this?

I'm not sure. But no worries about iFile. It's actually shareware. You can click "Purchase" and it will download and install without charging you anything. You'll get nag popups and some features are registered version only, but most of the functions you need are enabled.

If you decide to purchase it you can do that in-app.

I tried resetting the permissions noted above by comparing with ipod permissions but am still having issues (although I'm not entirely sure if I'm setting the permissions correctly). Setting wall/lockscreen via Settings still yields black screens.

Are these winterboard themes? Or replacing the actual file? What are your owner permissions? I believe it should be mobile, if it is root

Thanks for the input. It is not necessarily winterboard. Basically I have the same problem as the OP where I swapped out the new, modified Converted-LockBackground.jpg to the original.

Yes, all the files in the Springboard folder are "mobile."

I managed to manually input background screens via the Winterboard themes' html files but everytime I respring the icons go wacky. Selecting any folder also yields a black screen. I suspect the issue lies within the Springboard folder.

Update: After playing around with ifile, I found that the Springboard folder itself had incorrect permissions. Correcting it restored the phone in safe mode but I have all my original folders, and the lockscreen/homescreen issue has resolved. However, I cannot exit safe mode, probably due to another error in one of the Springboard files. Any help is greatly appreciated!
