I have an iPhone that is about 2.5 yrs old. So it is an older phone.
iPhone won't charge and Home button doesn't work.
Basically that's it.
I'm not sure why??
This happened spontaneously.

Frank

Plug it into iTunes and hit "restore" and set up as a new phone once that's finished.

Other than that there's not much you can do unless you're down for tearing it apart and replacing components.

Do a restore. If that doesn't work, go to the apple store since it's old I'm sure they will tell you what's wrong but you'll have to pay for the costs of repair. A tech will tell you the problem.

Humm,
I plugged it into the charger and it won't charge up.
I unplugged the connector from the charger cradle and it still won't start charging up.
I can't get it to show up on iTunes since it doesn't register via the usb.
Is there a way to "restart" it fresh from within the iPhone itself?

Hold the button on the top and the button on the front together until you get the white Apple logo to show up on screen. If you hold those two and nothing happens for a couple minutes then there's a good chance your battery is dead for good.

I went out to my car. The charger I have and have used for years, has a red indicator light when it is plugged into the charging receptacle. When I plug it into the iPhone the indicator usually turns green, and I get the distinct sound and the screen on the iphone with the charging indicator bar. When I plugged it in tonite, the indicator turned green, but I received no sound nor screen. Just a blank screen.
I can receive calls, and I can receive texts, but the Home button is basically dead and I get no indication of it is charging, and it doesn't link up w iTunes.
I have iTunes 9.1 also.
Thoughts.

I think you should try the hard reset that I suggested above.

The fact that you can receive calls and texts but have no screen function tells me your digitizer is dead.

>>I think you should try the hard reset that I suggested above.<<

I did that and I now have a screen with a usb cable an arrow pointing up to an iTunes logo!! NEVER saw that one before.
I probably should have updated my iphone when my contract expired. Not like I wasn't going to stay w an iPhone. I love the thing. <g>

We're at our daughter's for Easter and she suggested going to the Apple store tomorrow, Saturday 3 Apr 10. I told her it may well be the WRONG day to go since the iPad is being introduced and I bet the place will be a packed.

BTW, what is a digitizer.
AND I can hold in the top button only, close out the iPhone, restart it, get my Home Page screen and pick only one app to do. Since the Home Button won't work, I can't switch applications unless I shut down and basically "cold" reboot the iPhone.
Guess I have a real reason to buy another <g>.

Frank

I'm lost here. You say the home button doesn't work, but then you reboot the phone???? Rebooting requires holding the home and power buttons. If you're able to do this, then you should do a restore in DFU mode (see my sig).

Okay well that's progress. You can rule out your digitizer then. The screen you're seeing is Recovery Mode. Plugging it into iTunes should unlock that for you.

If you're feeling adventurous you can jailbreak the phone and get a tool that you can use as a "virtual home button". That way you can continue to use the phone at least until the new one is released to save yourself some serious buyer's remorse. Just make sure that you don't upgrade to the newest firmware.

There's some pretty good guides around here (check out the Hacks section) and if you're nervous about breaking it further I can assure you there's nothing you can do that can't be easily fixed.

Sorry, maybe I have the wrong terminology.
The button on the bottom front is what I'm calling the Home Button. It isn't responding. If I hold in button on the top alone, I get a screen that allows me to shut off the iPhone. I then repush that top button and I get my wallpaper. I can slide the on screen option that says "slide to unlock" which opens the iPhone and I get my Home Page. From there, I can select one and only one app to utilize.

>>Plugging it into iTunes <<

iTunes 9.1 doesn't seem to "see it."

The dock connector and the home button are on the same ribbon cable, that would explain the dock connector and the home button not working. You can buy replacements online but before you do that you may want to open your iPhone and check that it's not just a loose connection.

How tough is that??

obviously, the speaker is too. I can call out, but no one can hear me talk.

No offense to the OP or anything, but he's having trouble restoring a phone and you're telling him to OPEN it?

You said you've had it for 2.5 years, so I'm assuming it's the 2G? Those are a hassle to open up. Don't even bother.

It's time to get an update, IMO. Even if you don't want the newest model, you can get a 3G for almost nothing.

I'm the proud owner of a new iPhone 3GS.
Went to the Apple Store at Kenwood Mall in Cinci.
PACKED w people getting the new iPad.... which is very cool btw.

I'll use the old one as an iPod I guess.

Thanks for all the notes here though.
I do appreciate it.
I'm sure I'll be back here when I have sync problems w the new iPhone <g>
