Hello. Hoping someone smarter than me can help.

My wife had ordered an iPhone X and then her work ended up giving her one so she sold it to a friend of a friend unopened. My wife had bought the phone from Apple Store app, paid in full, and used her ATT account info when purchasing.

The friend contacted us to let us know that there is an Activation page that came up when she turned it on that is asking to verify the account before activation. It has my wife’s phone number pre-populated and then asks for the last 4 of her SSN and our billing zip code to verify identity and activate.

I obviously don’t want to provide someone else this information and am also worried it’ll boot my wife’s current phone off the network and make the sold phone “her” phone. Have talked to Apple and ATT all day and no one seems to know how to get past this. I figure there has to be a way tho bc people sell unopened phones all the time. I verified with ATT it is unlocked, but that hasn’t made a difference per the buyer.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Take out the SIM card that came with the phone and have your friend use her SIM card. If it’s truly unlocked, it will register the phone under your friend’s account

Thank you for the response. I would have thought the same, but no dice. I got confirmation the phone is indeed unlocked but this same activation obstacle is still presenting itself. I think it’s actually an Apple security thing. One doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the other.

Anyone experienced this and worked around it?

This isn't "Activation Locked" or tied to an Apple Security measure. It sounds like the phone you sold is still associated with your ATT account. You may need to contact ATT with the IMEI of the device and have it disassociated from your account.

Already tried it. They said that it’s not even showing up on the account, presumably because it hasn’t been activated. Strange strange strange.

Try to activate the phone with your wife’s SIM card. After the activation, transfer back the SIM to her phone and the account should switch the device to that phone she is currently using. Do this just to complete the activation.
