iPhone X iphone x blacklisted at&t

i have a small query .would appreciate the help.
i have this iphone X with me .It got stolen and i report it to at&t before buying a new one.
they blacklisted the phone and blocked it
weeks later someone honest returns the phone.
i have the phone with me now and i want to remove my icloud details from it and factory reset it so i can give it to my son to use it as an ipod.
My question is if i factory reset the phone ,how will i bypass the activation process.
because as far as i remember we need to put in a valid sim to complete the activation process.it is not accepting any sim at the moment.

how can i do that?

If someone returns the phone, you just enter your iCloud info to remove the activation and use any AT&T sim to activate it. It doesn't have to be an active SIM card as long as it is AT&T and activate it via WiFi since cellular service is blocked.

will the phone detect the at&t sim as it is blacklisted and has a command of not detecting any sim regardless of the status of the sim card.
should i go ahead and factory reset my iphone (that will automatically remove icloud).will there be any problem?

contact the insurance company or either sell it

If the insurance company already paid out for it, they own the phone.

The terms of your contract with them probably state that you need to return it to them.

i want to keep the phone since i paid for my new phone on my own.
