Is there any reason to believe that that iPhone X camera will be better than the iPhone 8's?

At this point, I only upgrade phones for better cameras and for the first time since the iPhone 5s I'm considering going to Android (Pixel 2) because of the camera capabilities but because I've all MacOS/iOS devices (and paid apps!), staying with the iPhones would be great, but not mandatory. I have a 7+ now and its great! However, being on the upgrade program, I feel a little more flexible with upgrading.

Sorry if this has been covered before, I did try to search for it in the forums but could not find anything.

Hi!

The main (wide angle) camera on the X is in every single way 100% identical to the 8/8 Plus. The telephoto lens on the X will have a slightly wider aperture and OIS. In daylight photos, there won't be much of a difference since there is an abundance of light. However, indoor photos that are zoomed in, and evening photos will be more clear, with less camera-shake and noise. Night photos may be unaffected, since the default camera software disables the zoom lens when its really dark and relies on digital zoom. There are apps that override this however, and in those cases the telephoto will have better performance at night/heavy darkness than the 7 Plus.

Ah, yes, I should have left that tidbit out as I'm really only asking about the iPhone X camera and the iPhone 8/+ camera
What's new:

The iPhone X has a f/1.8 aperture wide-angle lens like the iPhone 8 Plus, but a f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens, which means the iPhone X is slightly better equipped to take photos in conditions with low light. iPhone X photos will probably be brighter and all around better than those taken on the iPhone 8 Plus.

Unlike the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone X will have dual optical image stabilization on both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses on the back, which means photos and videos will be smoother and less blurry.

What really sets iPhone X apart is its front-facing camera system Apple calls "TrueDepth," which is capable of facial mapping and will power Face ID, Apple's new method for unlocking your phone. The front-facing camera is also capable of taking Portrait Mode selfies.

Awesome! Thank you for replying! I really should just wait until the phone is out in the wild for in-depth reviews.

7+, 8+, and Pixel 1 owner here. Each of these devices takes excellent pictures and I wouldn't switch between one of them simply for the camera alone, especially not from a 7+ to an 8+

Just to clarify with the other responses, all photos not zoomed in will be 100% exactly the same between the 7+ and 8+. The differences are only when zoomed in.

I definitely wouldn't upgrade to a 8/8+, but am considering between Pixel 2 and iPhone X. Not considering too hard, mind you. :)

here is deal

iphone 8/8+ = steve yzerman
iphone x = sergei fedorov

both good and both better than each other :D

The Pixel 2 doesn't interest me at all. From the camera tests I have seen it ultimately comes down to a preference thing. In all but a few shots to me the iPhone shots look much better than the Pixel and I am not convinced that the portrait effect is on par with what apple is offering, but I suppose that can be adjusted with software on their end in the future.

I do think the Pixel 2 XL will compete with the iPhone, not in terms of operating platform, but that there actually offering an OLED display aside from Samsung. But it has some nice features.
