I travel to UK often and was unsure about which iPhone X to purchase to Apple as there is not a sim free option.

I think the gsm (t mobile) would work in the UK, but would it be locked to t mobile as there is no sim free option?

Spoke to Apple but they weren’t much help, I also looked at the iPhone X let bandwidths page but don’t really understand it.

I’m not sure if you’re looking to get a local sim or not. Generally every major carrier either has their own network or a tie up with some other carriers to provide roaming service. This might be expensive if you stay in the uk for a long period. In that situation getting a local SIM card will be more economical and that will mean you’d need an unlocked phone.

Yeah I would get a local UK sim, but for the X there is no sim free option. So would I need to wait for that, or just buy it with T-Mobile but would that then be unlocked as standard?

None of the countries in the UK still use CDMA. Any model should be unlocked once it has been activated. (except maybe sprint)

Yeah, no longer required to have multiple sims at hand like the good ol' days. Or one of those fancy dual-sim phones!

If you use the Apple program your iPhone will be unlocked. If you use AT&T Next your iPhone will be locked. If you pay for it outright and have AT&T it will be unlocked.

I always use AT&T Next and get my iPhones unlocked at https://theunlockingcompany.com/App...Apple&model_name=iPhone+7&modelid&eid=1944403

GSM is best and most compatible...Just buy one properly unlocked in the UK, claim the tax back at the airport, and pop in a sim when you get back to the US ;) Then you have a proper unlocked phone...

Purchase the Verizon model. It will be unlocked and is also considered the global model since it is GSM and CDMA. Apple has lifted the carrier requirements at order so you no longer need to give account details when you purchase the phone.

You have not told us what is your current carrier. If you have T-mobile and bought it from Apple it is unlocked. You can either roam for free with 3G data in UK if on T-mobile One or T-mobile simple choice plan. If you are on Verizon, nothing to worry. When they bought out some small company they agreed to FCC to keep their phone unlocked.
