Firstly, I don't talk iPhone and I'm unable to distinguish Wallet from Apple Pay, so apologies if I'm confusing/conflating the two.
Secondly, if it makes a difference, I'm in the UK.
Have just bought a refurbished iPhone X on contract, because the price was so good it would be rude not to. Phone is so cosmetically perfect that I suspect it's unused, and everything's lovely except: I can't add my debit card to Wallet.
Error message is Could not add card. Try again later or contact your card issuer for more information. Over the phone the card issuer (NatWest) went through various steps I'd already tried without success, but confirmed there's no weird flag on my card/account.
Card was working on my previous iPhone 7. Wallet was transferred via the magic of 'placing your phones next to each other on set-up' with both phones running 15.0.1. What's transferred in the process appears to be 'everything but the three digit code from rear of card'. Entering that number and continuing takes me to a 'terms and conditions' page; on agreeing I get the Could not add card message. There's virtually no delay between three digit code, T&Cs and error message so I'm not sure if there's genuinely a 'negative response' from NatWest. Get same error message if I deliberately mess up the three digits, the expiry date, etc.
Have tried logging out and back into Apple ID. Have checked my region. Have deleted the transferred card from Wallet and tried to add a new card both manually and via camera. No dice.
Wiped my old iPhone 7 and set up from scratch, and was able to add the card without any problem. For giggles did the same thing with an original SE, and again the card was added without complaint.
Tried my wife's debit card on the X and again it failed but it's also NatWest and linked to the same joint account, so not the best test.
Have discovered the phone (a Vodafone contract, supplied by a reputable third party) turns out to be an A1865 iPhone X (Verizon/Sprint/China/A1865) but as far as I can tell that shouldn't make a difference to anything. But manufacture date is July 2018 and have read elsewhere that the NFC chip was iffy on models of that age.
Is a healthy NFC chip integral to adding a card to the Wallet? Don't have any NFC tags but if I wave the tag reader app at my debit card or Oyster card it comes back with 'tag not supported', which suggests that chip isn't dead.
Any clues?
