My friend is selling his iPhone X. Which would you do?

IPhone X for around 700 - purchased earlier this year
IPhone Xr for 795 (incl tax)

iPhone X hands down. But if you really care about the 0.3 inch increased screen size, the XR isn’t a bad phone either.

I'm hanging on to my X, but if anything were to happen to it between now and the next release, I'd go for the XR.

Let’s see,

XR:

No HDR display like the X
No 3D Touch like the X.
No telephoto / zoom lens like the X.

Both XR and X have same waterproof IP67 and Qualcomm LTE Advanced modem.

X also has better resolution and Rear camera:

XR LCD 1792×828 resolution (326 PPI) vs X OLED 2436×1125 resolution (458 PPI).

XR Single 12-megapixel rear camera (wide-angle lens) vs X Dual lens 12-megapixel rear camera.

The XR is better in these areas.

A11 vs A12 Bionic chip
3GB RAM vs 4GB RAM
Single SIM vs Dual SIM
5.8 ratio display vs 6.1

So some downgrades, some upgrades and some side grades. Guess it’s up to you which is more important, especially at the same price and will be subjective to who you ask.

Personally I like my X and to go from OLED to LCD is a downgrade I can’t live with. Apps opening up less than a second slower on my X is something I can easily live with.

X: sharper display, smaller size, 3D Touch, dual lens camera for portrait mode

XR: more colour, longer battery life, bigger display, better Color production, overall better camera and better HDR, dual sim with esim and nanosim, faster processor, better & faster FaceID 2nd gen, better front facing camera

XR battery performance is for me the main reason I would choose the XR, it is a beast and gets me through the day with 6 hours screen time and still 30 to 25% battery left at the end of the day. I managed 10 hours screen time the other day ending ok 15% battery, but I was home all day and on strong WiFi.

All 2018 iPhones have Intel modems. Only the CDMA model X has a Qualcomm modem.

Both X and XR have 3GB RAM.

The A12's ML processing unit is much faster, which enables Smart HDR.

On the XR (and XS) the new sensor/lens/HDR makes it a better camera. Without the telephoto lens, it does lose out on optical zoom and the portrait mode doesn't work on inanimate objects, but a side effect of using the wider lens for its more limited portrait mode is that it works better in low light.

Pick your poison.

And isn't the antenna in the XR 2x2 and the XS is 4x4?
And that may be why the XR is not having as much reception issues as the XS models.

Yes, that's correct. But both XR and X have a 2x2 MIMO array, so there's no difference in that respect.
