What do you guys think? Do you think that the iPhone X is overpriced, or do you think that it is justly priced, or even cheap? Please post your ideas in the comments below.

The iPhone X pricing is not cheap at all. But everybody will justify the price point differently based on their appreciation for the phone. But given the inflation of smart phones today, the iPhone X is a great iPhone, but $1,100.00 seems high.

I’ve got an X, for me the overpricing is on the other models like the 8.

If the 8 was lower, then the X could be priced a bit lower than today. But given the high price of the 8 it’s inevitable we get to $1000.

Point out something to me that is not overpriced.

The iPhone X is ridiculously overpiced. Then again, all Apple products are. You could easily get or buid a computer that can outdo an iMac for about half the price. But this is about iPhone.

Actually building a computer is way easier than building a smartphone. The price is for minimising the components of a full fledged computer into the palm of your hand.

I don’t think it’s overpriced for the tech it carries but then average consumers don’t really understand all that. They just look at the price tag.

Been in the technology business I face this everyday. People can happily pay for a cup of coffee costing £2.20 without having a second thought but feels like they’re being ripped off to pay for an app costing £0.79.

Bear in mind the efforts to prepare a cup of coffee is not even close in comparison to developing a decent app.

Except the computer example deals only with raw performance. Stuff like design/OS/ease of use/screen quality/all-in-one/customer support, while secondary to many people, are what you really end up paying the premium for.

As for the iPhone, they do cost a bit more than I personally would like, but like the Mac mentioned above, those are the sorts of things that you generally end up paying for. Plus, people buy it, so I guess that's the clearest indication of whether it's appropriately priced.

With that said, I think we all wish whatever we are currently buying was a little cheaper. Regardless of whether we find value in it or not. It's just natural.

Making cost comparisons usually isn't fruitful, it is all about value to the consumer, and every consumer has to make their own judgement.
Those that want it, buy it, those that don't will pass on it for a number of reasons, cost just being one.
I have an iPhone X because I like the features and the cost differential wasn't that great to me.

But seriously, there are dozens of the iPhone is too expensive threads and the issue has been hashed repeatedly

Okay, then tell me what is not overpriced?

I wouldn't say all Apple products are overpriced. I think the AirPods are a great example, for the technology that you're receiving and battery life compared to the competition, I feel they are appropriately priced. At least based on my uses.

Not everybody purchases an iMac because Of speed or what it "Can't" do. They purchase it because it works best for their productivity and work solutions or personal reasons.

Watching a TV game show like "The Price is Right" gives you some idea in the wild swings in people's opinions about price.

Pricing obviously isn't objective based on materials or a set of specs, it is subjective based on perceived value, whether that value is performance, brand, status or any other user defined criteria.

Those who say the iPhone X is overpriced are making a judgement based on their criteria of value
For some it is:
  • Arbitrary based on the $1000 threshold
  • Doesn't offer enough over the 7/8 series to justify cost differential
  • Lacks home button / Touch ID
  • Uses Face ID and other tech perceived to be not ready
  • Etc. etc.
Those who say it isn't overpriced, or it is and they still buy it see the same item but perceive the value differently
  • Better screen
  • Better size
  • Better camera
  • Face ID as advanced tech
  • Etc. etc.
Some feel it is overpriced and buy it anyway
Others aren't concerned about the price, but feel the new features don't offer enough reason to upgrade
