iPhone X proximity sensor too sensitive

So ... it's been about 2 weeks, I've noticed my screen is blanking out as if I had the phone up to my ear. This is the proximity sensor that does this - and I perceive it has somehow become too sensitive.

Simply moving my hand (even briefly) too close to the top of the screen near the sensor causes the screen to black and it shouldn't do this.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Anyway to disable the sensor before I take the phone to a genius bar?

I have the X and have not had this issue. Have you tried all the usual troubleshooting steps: reboot, hard reset, reset all settings, restore through iTunes? If yes, then I’d take it to an Apple store.

I am having the same exact problem on my iPhone 6 Plus. This something new. I believe it started after the latest upgrade. The screen would go black when coming close to the sensor or the camera all the time not only during phone calls as it should be but all the time. It is especially annoying because I watch YouTube a lot on the phone and if I hold it from the speaker side, which is the side that my folio cover comfortably allows to hold the phone, the screen would go black a lot because my hand got in the vecinity of the upper part of the screen.

Is there an explanation or a solution for this behavior?

I have the X and have not had this issue. Have you tried all the usual troubleshooting steps: reboot, hard reset, reset all settings, restore through iTunes? If yes, then I’d take it to an Apple store.

No ... and I wasn't going to attempt it unless necessary. The proximity sensor should only be operational when on the phone. No other time. I was about to go to the Apple store, then a recent update fixed the issue. I no longer have an issue with the sensor.

Moral of this story - never inconvenience yourself with draconian troubleshooting steps unless absolutely necessary. Something gave up the ghost a couple updates ago and the latest one corrected it.

I’m well aware of when the proximity sensor is supposed to be operational. The issue you were having isn’t a wide spread issue which is why I asked if you had done the troubleshooting steps I mentioned in my last post... The first two not being draconian whatsoever. While the last two steps can take a little more effort, it beats the inconvenience of going to an Apple store had that been necessary if one of the troubleshooting steps didn’t fix the issue or a software update wasn’t available which coincidentally fixed the issue, probably because the phone resets itself in the process. Glad it’s resolved
