Yesterday, my Iphone X was replaced with another brand new Iphone X when I checked it in for repair at the apple store to fix the apple acknowledged multi-touch display issue. They replaced the whole phone since something went wrong while replacing the display module. But I am curious, since Apple doesn't make Iphone X anymore. So why didn't they replace it with an Iphone XS? Anyone else who had a similar experience?

Apple has plenty of refurbished stock for replacements.

There is a popular YouTube video from a couple weeks ago where someone built a 64GB iPhone X with refurbished parts for $500.

Thanks for your reply. But they told me it's brandnew. If it is refurbished I would imagine they would say that. Also the model number starts with an N, which I believe is a code for replacement device and not refurbished which I believe has another letter.

The Apple Store staff don’t say refurbished to avoid arguments with customers. To Apple, it’s a like new product whether it’s refurbished or not. If it were brand new, it would have the appropriate model number.

They did the same thing for me when I brought my X in for repair for the multi touch issue... told me it was easier to just give me a replacement then to fix...but the following week I brought my wife’s X in for same issue and they ended up repairing? So must be at the discretion of the genius...

It’s not brand new, it’s remanufactured to “like new” condition.. Don’t think too much about it enjoy the phone. N is refurbished:

Apple's "refurbs" are brand new quality anyways. part number, parts might be refurbished but the phones are impeccable in condition

It could be brand new or it could be refurbed. It really wouldn't matter too much in either case.

Also, there was a rumor/report a few weeks ago that indicated that Apple was increasing production of the X to meet demand in Japan.

One other thing, Apple will keep production lines open for devices that they've discontinued to produce stock for warranty replacement. They'll be manufacuturing/refurbishing the X for a few more years for warranty and recall issues.

Correct, Model that starts with N indicates a replacement unit.

Model that starts with F indicates that it's a refurbish unit
Model that starts with P indicates it is personalized (i.e Engraving)

As other people have said, the replacement phones ARE refurbished. It's just they look brand new because Apple replaces the housing and more of the parts, including battery and etc, so it's basically brand new, just without the box and accessories.

If they were to give you an official brand new phone, you would have needed to return your box and accessories untouched too.

Needless to say, Apple's refurbished devices are 1:1 to the brand new ones and cost much less.
