Today is my birthday and my brother surprised me with an iPhone X. I didn't have the heart to ay anything about the impending new ones coming in a couple of weeks. Is it possible that I can return it where he got it and get one of the new ones in 2 weeks?

I would ask your brother where he got it. If it's at the Apple Store, you can return it to any apple store in your area and they will accept it. You may need to tell them because refunds usually to the original card used, so you may need to ask if they can put it on the gift card.

Awwwh man, I feel for you. There's no right way to play it when there's such a nice gesture. Birthday especially.

I agree about speaking with your brother about it, just advise Apple are releasing some newer ones really soon and the prices might even be lower - so you're looking out for him to save some cash and returning it now means you can also have a great day out with the money he'll save.

I'd say that's the best way to go. :)

If you got a gift receipt from your brother for the device, Apple will offer you an Apple Store Gift Card than returning the amount to the original payment method. You can use it to purchase a new device. However, Sept 12 is about 14 days from the allowed return window so it is possible they can do an exchange for a newer device.

Or be up front about it to your brother that new devices are about to announce in the coming days and return the device early to allow sufficient time for that amount to go back to the original payment method and purchase a new device on pre-order day.

If it was Purchased direct from an Apple store, Apple can look up the transaction ID from where the iPhone was purchased from, and they will accept the return in full (Assuming the Phone is not damaged, ect). Many members have done so in similar situations.

I would wait, if the FaceID isn’t improved their will most likely be no point in changing a, very nice, present for something else.
I would keep it anyway if it was me as it’s a gift, sentimental value and all that.

Just bear in mind the new ones may not be available for a few weeks yet after the launch event.

Hopefully, he bought at an Apple store, there's no restocking fee. And if you ask, they could certainly put it on a gift card so it can be a flawless transaction for your new toy.
