Hello everyone, Few weeks ago I started having trouble with my Face-ID. It would fail on waking and said "Face-ID service unavailable" when I went into the settings. couple of days after that I noticed that my screen is starting to come loose most noticeably on the sides.

This is on both sides although one side is more prominent than the other. I can push it back down but then the other side raises up.
So my question really boils down to this:
How severe is this problem? How long can I expect this to remain a mild problem (I can't use Face-ID) or should I expect the screen to crack relatively shortly. Should I risk it and wait for the newest iPhone or get a iPhone 11 immediately?

Bonus question! Would this issue reduce the phone's trade in value at a Apple Store? I'm kind of in the market for a new iPad (still rocking a iPad Air 2!) so I'd like to add this to the trade-in discount.

Looks to me like the battery is swelling which makes the phone very dangerous to use. Swelling may be an indication that the battery is getting ready to explode.

the curvation is at the front if the picture is unclear on that. Would that mean I'd have to switch to a new phone asap?

The battery occupies a large amount of space in the phone. I can't think of any reason for the swelling.

If it were my phone, I would remove the battery asap to prevent damage to the screen and other components.

Apple won't take that phone as a trade but they just might replace the battery for you at no charge.. Normally a visit to the Apple store would be in order but now you'll have to contact them and ask them what your options are..

Late last fall I traded in an iPhone X for a new iPhone 11 Pro at an apple store. Ordered it online, for pickup. That evening I took the iPhone X out of the case and noticed the same issue with the screen separating from the actual body. I turned it off and placed it in a cast iron casserole dish with a heavy lid, just to be safe overnight. The next morning I took it to the Apple store and explained that I was going to trade the iPhone X in (by mail) with them, but then "this happened", and I showed them the screen separation (By this point the separation was worse than you show in your photos). Amazing - they took the phone from me right then and there and exchanged it for a refurbished iPhone X. Then they processed that refurbished iPhone X as the trade, and I also purchased the iPhone 11 Pro at the same time.
Apple were very concerned about that iPhone X - for several reasons I am sure. One being the possibility of the battery exploding. I was convinced then and there that Apple had some issues with the iPhone X battery, which never became a formal recall. But they couldn't have been more pleasant. Granted this was late last September, but the iPhone X was close to two years old at that point........
So, I suggest you go to a store and see what they may do for you. Just keep it pleasant :)

l'm not sure if you think I'm the OP but I have no issue with my phone. I offered him the same advice as you offered me.
