I have a friend who bought an iPhone X on launch day. He’s used his phone with the screen on full brightness for close to two years now. Just suddenly after updating to iOS 13 he noticed his screen suffered burn in, but it show the home screen with the keyboard in a somewhat unusual state. When he uses it on full brightness the screen is usually displaying moving content and not static images. Could this possible make the screen more susceptible to burn in from small events over time (how it was suck at that screen and he doesn’t recall seeing it stuck like that either) It’s not horrible but it’s noticeable. It’s not bad enough to warrant a $279 screen replacement.

Same issue with iPhone X OLED burn-in here.

Purchased launch day. At some point during iOS 13 the keyboard got burned-in and hasn’t gone away. I do use max brightness often but the display’s never on for extended periods of time that would come close to causing such burn-in.

The only thing more frustrating than this defect is dealing with Apple Support about it. I’m American but living in Japan now. Customer service here, though polite, is extremely rigid and useless. Why hire humans when a robot can recite warranty validity to me just as easy? 😒

I’ve tried online support too but they won’t budge on this either. 1 Year warranty, no exceptions. I’d accept it if this were my doing, but this is clearly a defective product they sold me. When I ask them if the display’s supposed to look like this after less than 3 years use, they dodge the question. If I say that by being inflexible about a $300 repair price, they’re not only not getting $300 from me, but losing out on far more in future purchases (you’d think CS would have a customer’s purchase history up whileon chat) they send a canned “we understand your frustration...” response. Whatever. You win, I give up. 😞

Has anyone had better luck with Support on this? If so, what did you say?

It seems things always start unwinding around 3 years on all the phones I've had.

I upgraded to iOS 14 and noticed this burn in right away, I have no idea why. I mean the keyboard is up a lot but who knows. My speaker is crackling and when i type messages it freezes a lot when i first start typing.

I kind threw in the towel when i saw tmobile would give me 400 on trade for an iPhone 12 pro, i ordered one. I've gotten 3 hard years out of it so i guess i should be happy.

The device is out of warranty by two years. Unless there is an Apple Support Program for the model or there is a safety issue, I wouldn’t expect them to budge.

From Apple’s perspective, burn in is a cosmetic issue. This is similar to the Product Red XR and 11 that had faded colors due to sunlight.

I’ve had cosmetic issues (defects that I didn’t cause by an accident or mis-use) fixed outside of warranty before, but I guess that was the exception to the rule. Also... Not similar. Colors fade? Put a case on it. I can't hide the display.

I’ve purchased Apple products for a long time because they’re generally well built and last, and if they don’t they’ve always done right by me to correct the issue. I’ve had much better experience with their customer service in store in the States, but with international travel restrictions these days I haven’t been able to get to one.

I knew about OLED burn-in before purchasing, so I was always careful when using the phone to avoid it. I figured if Apple took so long to adopt this tech, they’d have fixed or minimized this problem, or at least fixed it for me had it occurred.

But at the same time, I have to recognize that the $2 Trillion corporation might lose some pocket change selling extended warranties if they helped me in this case. I suppose I really should expect a $1250 device to look like hot garbage after less than 3 years, and it’s my fault for not giving them more money to upgrade earlier. 🙄
