Looking for input on my dilemma here. I started a new job and have to move my phone over to their account in order to provision it on their MDM and get email on my phone (pretty much required). Based on the timing of new phones, I can't wait until the new phones come out. I have to pay off my AT&T next phone regardless to move the number. Currently I have about 40gb of used space on my iPhone, could probably slim that down a little.

My options are:
keep my iPhone 7 and be bound to it for 2 years (not happening)
get an iPhone 8 and keep it for 2 years (64gb - $50, 256gb - $200)
get an iPhone X and keep it for 2 years (64gb - $350, 256gb - $500)

There is no option to get a new phone early...so if you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Its all preference if you want the iPhone X having the latest technology/new design or do you want an older style form factor with touch ID? Personally, I would opt for the iPhone X being Face ID will be a more relevant form of biometric security moving forward, even though Touch ID is still very reliable. So, the decision appears to factor down to older form factor V.S the new aesthetics with the iPhone X.

Buy both
Place atop each other in microwave
Set to popcorn
Press enter
Wait 4 minutes
Open door
Allow to cool down (use the knuckles test)
Voila, you have the most ultimate iPhone!
That might smell like butter

I have an iPhone X, but see no reason why you couldn;t have an iPhone 8 and be fairly happy with it.
It depends on whether you want the additions that the X give you:
Larger usable screen
Additional RAM
Twin cameras
Face ID
Newer form factor

Really, the 8 and X are very similar internally (although the obvious external differences are striking).

Get the largest capacity you can afford...you can't add memory to an iPhone, but you can leave some capacity unused without it "going off"...I know - obvious statement, but it's important, when you look at the cost too.

all in all, it comes down to personal preference and affordability, but if you're stuck for 2 years, think carefully...the 8 may not feel like much of an upgrade over the 7, due to the fact that it's similar

The memory was my biggest concern, I know today it wont seem like a huge difference, but a year from now that 1gb extra may be.

In terms of capacity, I'm at about 40gb used now between everything, half of that being music, which is a little excessive, I could likely slim it down a bit, so I'm thinking I might be fine with the 64gb, its actually $350 for the 64gb and $500 for the 256gb...am I crazy to want to save the extra $150 and try to slim down my usage? I can afford whatever, that's not a big deal, I'm trying to justify the extra cost to myself.

I would go 1 of 2 ways.

1) I would only pic the 8 if money was an issue that being the case I would opt for the $50 and make the 64G work for the next 2 years (highly doable since you are only using 40G of your seven but it would take management).

2) The other, more desirable, option would be to go all out and get 256G on an X rig. This gives you tech and space to grow. The more I think about it at 500 smackaroonies this is the only real option unless your broke (which is ok just means that $50 is the play)

If this is truly the case, then 2 years, being quite a long time in the tech world, leaves you only one real option.
256gb X...no compromises and no envy - at least for a year.
The new iPhones are going to look and function much like the X, so you'll have what appears and feels like the latest and greatest for a while yet.

If your not on a budget, then get the X over the 8.

For those of you still using a home button : I can’t tell you how much you’ll be glad you switched once you see for yourself how natural it feel.

I hope Apple continue without home button and that includes not having a new under display fingerprint scanner even if they could. IMO We’ve evolved beyond it with new UI and will look back at the home button with nostalgia soon. I already do.

Tough call. I've had both, and frankly, I never really figured out which one I liked more.

Face ID has shortcomings, as does the Touch ID. Crap shoot.

Then there's the people who get headaches from the X (bizarre perhaps ), so their problem's solved.

Both the iPhone X and 8 are going to be relevant for the next 2 years so really it’s up to you. If you want to spend considerably more than you need to then get the X. There’s no shame in wanting a newer looking device after all. Personally I’d buy the 8 and I’m in your shoes from next month and that’s my personal decision.

I'd get the iphone 8.

Less than half the cost, similar speed, no notch, not a v1.0 product.

Both will have the same end of support time-frame.

I think a major thing to consider is Face ID versus the fingerprint scanner. I myself like using my fingerprint button versus the Face ID. On the 8 it is blazing fast and for me feels more secure and I am used to it. My son has a X and I can open my phone faster. This though is a personal preference and in that regard to each their own.

Thanks everyone for the input, it's very helpful (that doesn't mean I'm not open to more :) ) I'm just now waiting for it to go through the system and hear from ATT before I have to make the decision
