On Monday, I was quite happily using WiFi Calling to make calls on my iPhone X from this rural area with no cellular coverage.

Tuesday morning, I could not connect. Nothing changed to my knowledge. The phone is running 15.1. I have done all the recommended things, turn off and on, turn airplane mode off and on, reset the network settings, go to an area with cellphone coverage, check carrier settings, reboot the router, connect to another WiFi network, and so forth. Nothing worked.

I have today got hold of a Samsung phone and using my SIM, set it up and it connects to WiFi Calling just fine. So it’s definitely a device issue, but I am at a loss as to why it was fine for months and from Tuesday, nothing.

There are no Apple Stores here, so I am hoping some here may have some ideas? 15.1 apparently has some connection issues for 12 and 13 models, but seems a long way from the issue I have. What could have changed?

Any ideas would be very appreciated, ‘cause I’m baffled.

Only thing I've noticed with wifi calling is it switches back and forth (cellular to wifi) depending on cellular signal strength in low signal areas. You can watch it go back and forth during the call (when on speaker).. It doesn't effect the quality of the call so not really a complaint. Does wifi work normally at the same location for internet?

Yes, always worked normally and there is no switching because there is no cellular coverage within 10km for it to switch across to. Sometimes when coming back home after being in a cell covered area, one has to switch the WiFi Calling off and on again because it doesn’t connect automatically every time.

And to be clear, the internet connection is fine. I can communicate on Teams and Whatsapp etc, just no longer on WiFi Calling. Odd.

That is odd. Is it possibly a router issue? I know it worked in the past but maybe you should check to see if there is a firmware update for it available. Also, did you update the phone recently or around the same time your problems started? Sometimes cellular carriers update cellular firmware during iOS updates. I'm just trying to think of anything that could cause your issue so maybe some of my suggestions may have been addressed by you already

Thanks for your thoughts, it’s appreciated.

I don’t think it’s a router issue because the Samsung phone connects flawlessly using the same SIM. I’ve updated the cellphone carrier’s settings along with everything else I thought to check. The phone was updated to 15.1 a while back and worked fine till Tuesday. I don’t think any update was sent out (I understand that 15.1.1 went out but not for the iPhone X).
