I noticed back in April, my iPhone iPhone XR heats up when plugged into the car. It seems hotter if I am using it at the same time it is plugged in and it stops charging. I've changed the plug to a new one. I've tried different cords. These same cords work fine in the house in the wall and the MacBook. When it's plugged in at home and I use it, I never see it stop charging and don't even notice if it is hot. I also have no charging issues when plugged into the Mophie power bank. In the car, I have to take the Otterbox off and hold the phone up the the air conditioning (vent) to cool it down and it will charge again...but I have to stay off it. I find it odd it doesn't act this way in the house (it should be noted it doesn't matter which car...my mother's, husband's, etc...all behave the same. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Based on what you've described, that it will charge again once it's cooled down, it sounds like it's just a temperature issue and your car gets too hot, and not specific to the car, or charging cables. It also sounds like you've already got a workaround for it. Have you tested with someone else's phone?

Sounds like your car charging is providing higher voltage and the voltage regulator in the iPhone is work overtime to compensate.

It is the typical USB plug. I've swapped a number of them out to test.

It's happening with other usb "plugs" (even new ones) in other cars... and my Apple cord doesn't have the issue at home...nor does my phone. If it was a voltage issue with the plug, wouldn't it not do it with other ones? That's what's odd to me. It doesn't matter the car, the cord, the outlet/plug..it gets hot. I use the phone a lot when we travel....until this sucker is paid off, I'm going to have to rely on the Morphie bank (and holy cow! That C connection works fast!!!!!)

Actually, I went into "BATTERY" and found that the optimize battery was on... meaning, the phone will estimate when to charge and by when according to your habits🧐. I looked because I was laying in bed watching a video on it and it did not get hot. Then I checked charging and it wasn't charging. Once I flipped that optimizing off, it charged quicker than I ever remember it!
