Has anyone seen any good YouTube videos with a hands on with the XR's haptic touch? For those who don't know, 3D Touch was removed w/ the XR. However, Apple did mention haptic touch, so maybe that could mimic 3D Touch's app shortcuts and features? A lot of us are used to the cool keyboard 3D Touch function. Hope to see that still around with the XR.

Apple needed a fancy marketing name for long-press.

Also, Nilay Patel has a hands-on with the Xr and it didn't look like it recognized long-presses on app icons for him. Other videos could show otherwise however.

Damn, that sucks. I’ll miss the keyboard function. Still not enough to convince me to get the XS. Though I may look at getting a X.

Apple has incorporated a lot of 3D Touch features for older devices in iOS 12. You can long press on the X in Notification Center to clear all and you can tap and hold the space bar on the keyboard to move the cursor. Gone though, are home screen quick actions and peek and pop. These only work on 3D Touch enabled devices.

So the Xr will be able to use the keyboard cursor by holding down the spacebar? If so, that has the POTENTIAL to sway me to the Xr.

I do use 3D Touch specially for replying Messages and this could be the biggest downside of the iPhone XR. This is the only video I found where this is addressed:
It seems it will be solved with haptic touch.

Another concern is the low resolution

With 3D Touch being removed, it’s going to be simulated by long press. And as MKHBD mentioning that above video, Apple did work around that using long press for features like changing the brightness, etc.

They need to get more shortcuts from the home screen however.

I’ll be really disappointed if Apple actually abandons 3D Touch. I use it all the time for a bunch of things. Long press isn’t the same thing. Personally, I think the current anti-3D Touch campaign being waged by the Verge is BS.

The lack of 3D Touch is quite an omission. No confidence in the Haptic Touch workaround.

Why no confidence?

For me it is some kind of muscle memory. Everytime i use my iPad i try to use Peek and Pop. And even with the long press of ios 12 it doesn’t feel the same. I just think 3D Touch didn’t really take off, because Apple poorly showed the benefits and with the lack of an iPad equivalent it didn’t really gain enough traction for developers. So yeah, Haptic touch will be finally only a long press.

Am I the only person that didn't know that 3d touch was even a thing before this? Obviously I must have lived under a rock when I watched the last few keynotes and never heard of it (or looked into it). I don't use it..but now I have to try it out ;)

3D Touch is one of the best features that no one uses lol

I have absolutely loved it since the 6s, and I hope it stays and that it’s a result of the liquid retina limitations as to why it wasn’t implemented

3D touch was only ever a glorified long touch. Apple took an overly complicated approach to doing the same thing.

I completely disagree. The function itself is very useful. The issue with it is the interface. It only seems “complex” because the user experience is half baked.

But I really do use it all the time. I’d be very unhappy if it goes away.

Any one have any info on expanded Haptic Touch? As far as app shortcuts and peek and pop? It could certainly be done. 3D Touch is the only feature I miss coming from my 7 Plus.

I don’t think there’s been any more info to give on it. I can definitely see them expanding its capabilities further in the future. A lot can be achieved via long-press and if they do decide to phase out 3D Touch to cheapen the displays up in the future, I can see all models moving to Haptic Touch as a replacement.
