My assumption is this: As the average usable lifespan of iPhones is increasing, Apple sees the need to raise prices to compensate. Older hardware doesn't drastically slow down running the latest software in two or three years like it used to, and consequently iPhone owners are staying with the same device for longer, upgrading less often.

Despite the 120Hz display and 5G / 802.11ax connectivity advancements that will be available in the not-so-distant future, do you see the need to balance out the high price by keeping the iPhone Xs or Xs Max for a longer time?

The answer is: I don't know.

I was thinking of upgrading my 6s to Xs Max and next year to upgrade to the newest model as well but that really depends if the changes are worth upgrading. IMO they will, I'm kinda expecting a triple lens camera and what else... but I could also easily skip next year and possibly the year after too, but I would really want more lens on my iPhone lol

120 Hz display and no notch would be good enough for me to change it but I think that's 1-2 years away and I would aim to get at least 2 years of use out of the Xs.
