TLDR: iPhone XS Max, iOS 13.1.2, completely ran out of storage, won't start, not able to "update" and keep data in recovery mode, any idea on ways to potentially keep the data?

A relative of mine has a 512GB iPhone XS Max that's running iOS 13.1.2
The phone was running out of storage, 511.7/512GB
She was trying to delete some photos when the system complained, then the phone shut off.
It won't startup again, got frozen at white apple black background.
We tried "If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up" on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201412
In the end we are not able to "update" and keep data in recovery mode.
She still would like to try to get the photos out of the phone.

Probably because it's full,
- in recovery mode, finder tries to download the latest iOS version and "update" failed with `error 14`
- in iMazing, "update" without wiping, ended up with error 14 as well. Here is some detail error message:

```
Cannot restore iPhone XS Max.
Error Domain=com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore Code=-1 "AMRestorePerformRestoreModeRestoreWithError failed with error: 14"
UserInfo = {
NSLocalizedDescription = AMRestorePerformRestoreModeRestoreWithError failed with error: 14,
NSUnderlyingError = 0x60000336ad60 {
Error Domain = AMRestoreErrorDomain Code = 14 "Failed to handle message type StatusMsg"
UserInfo = {
NSDescription = Failed to handle message type StatusMsg,
NSUnderlyingError = 0x6000033c11a0 {
Error Domain = AMRestoreErrorDomain Code = 14 "failed to restore APFS image"
UserInfo = {
NSDescription = failed to restore APFS image
}
}
}
}
}
```
- also tried to use 13.1.2 apsw, hoping it won't need any extra storage. But unfortunately Apple already unsigned it so we couln't even see what will happen

No Bacckup?
She has 2T iCloud plan, but was having trouble with iCloud and photo backup, like photo on iCloud won't load the HD version on the phone. After the phone brick, we realized this phone barely uploaded any photo to iCloud.

The bottom of the page suggests calling Apple. Did you try that?

Thank you for the reply. We did try to chat with them and was just directed to the Apple help page. Told us have to "restore"(wipe out data) if unable to update.

I just entered DFU mode(after dozens of times unable to entering it), try to keep date and install with iMazing, it went all the way to "restoring image, 100%", but the process stop at the same time as in recovery mode, the error message is identical.

`Error Domain=com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore Code=-1 "AMRestorePerformRestoreModeRestoreWithError failed with error: 14" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=AMRestorePerformRestoreModeRestoreWithError failed with error: 14, NSUnderlyingError=0x6000002ea220 {Error Domain=AMRestoreErrorDomain Code=14 "Failed to handle message type StatusMsg" UserInfo={NSDescription=Failed to handle message type StatusMsg, NSUnderlyingError=0x6000000708d0 {Error Domain=AMRestoreErrorDomain Code=14 "failed to restore APFS image" UserInfo={NSDescription=failed to restore APFS image}}}}}`

:( She even tried to email tcook@apple.com, it's a lot of photos and memories in there...

I guess I'll try to call Apple later today.

HI! Do you have any updates? I ran into this problem too. My iPhone 11 Pro max ran out of storage. :( Nothing helped

Not yet. Are you also trying to keep the data (using "update" instead of "restore" in iTunes/Finder) and just want to make the phone to start up normally again?

Useless apple support suggests to bring it to an authorized repair place and ask them to try to fix it without wiping data. Apple would just wipe everything out if sending in for repair.

All attempts to install without wiping out data fails at about 1/3 of installation progress bar on apple logo screen.
I plan to use a normal iPhone with local backup to experiment a bit with some phone recovery app and see what they can do before plugging in the phone that's in trouble, so it does not mess with data in there.

The only good news is that her May 2019 iCloud backup actual has photos, so she got some photos back when try to restore on a new iPhone. iCloud totally messed things up, iCloud photo was turned on for sure back then, I guess at least the backup mechanism is recognizing iCloud photo was actually not "on" and includes the photos in the whole device backup.

I've had the same problem on my sister's ip6s. She even cried when I told her that the data was unrecovable ha but luckily I let the phone on the apple logo like an hour it came back on and I had to delete few Gb's worth of stuff to make room for the software update. After updating it phone became more responsive and I could make a full backup so I could restore it on a newer ip xs max 512gb.

Thank you for the reply. Apple is probably not aware of the issue because not enough people complain about it. Why would the system allow stuff to be filled up... My relative post her experience on some sort of social media and got quite some replies talking about similar issue. I'm glad to hear your sister's phone came back on, I think my aunt's phone goes straight to recovery screen asking the phone to be plugged in at this time

Good afternoon. did you manage to solve? I have the same problem as you.

If you saved a backup to a computer, then just restore phone and wipe will take everything off. Once the process is complete, restore your backup. If you are one of the few who don’t trust iCloud with your information, then all your data will be gone. You rather have photos gone instead of out of 100’s of dollars.

I am in the same boat. Any body has any luck recovering data. Did visit to Apple store help? Or any other software.

Unfortunately I'm in the same boat. Phone was low on space and stopped responding prompting me to reboot it and now it's stuck at the Apple logo. The volume up, down, hold power isn't working. Not enough space on the phone to finish the update. All I want is the photos and videos. Anyone had any luck getting their phone booted or recovering the files? Apple REALLY need to address this issue!! Maybe we should all go to Twitter, Facebook and other social sites to bring more awareness to this, maybe it will light a fire under them to address or potentially scare a lot of people away. NO ONE likes to lose pictures.

Not that it matters but this is why I tell everyone to have a backup. If it's important back it up.

hello im currently experiencing the same thing right now... is anyone resolved their problem?

This other macrumors fourm post seems to be a solution. I'm still working through mine, but it sounds like it takes a lot of patience, a lot of repeated attempts and a good dose of luck.

Good luck to all of us with this issue...
