Hey everyone,

When I first upgraded to iOS 17 my iPhone XS seemed to be handling it pretty well. However, this has devolved into a mess of stuttering when switching apps, full on freezing, black screens, and the phone not even waking the screen when locked. Swiping to the camera from the lock screen is hit or miss whether the camera will open. Also, when using the camera it's like everything is moving in slow motion, Pictures will be extremely blurry if there is the smallest amount of movement.

This upgrade really has vibes of... my phone is being purposely slowed to make me upgrade. To be fair this device is five years old. However, if it cannot handle this iOS it should not have been supported for it.

Additionally my phone can't make it with 3 hours of use before needing to be charged. 100% down to 17% in three hours. The battery health is at 83% and the battery was last changed by Apple in December 2022. They said there's nothing they will do until it is below 80%. Yet there's been this fast degrade in less than a year.

Anyone else having a crap time with iOS 17.1 on an iPhone XS?

I unfortunately have given in and ordered a iPhone 15 Pro Max, but I want to give this phone to my mother-in-law and it seems like a disservice to give it to her with these issues.

Thanks

It definitely sounds like an aging battery. The symptoms you just described are similar to those of BatteryGate where the phone was getting throttled. If your phone can’t run more than 3 hours on a single charge, it’s time to consider getting the battery replaced.

And to think that the A12 Bionic on iOS 12 is perhaps the best and smoothest combo ever...

I run iOS 12 on my iPhone Xʀ and it’s perhaps even slightly better than my iPad Air 5 (M1), on its original iOS version, iPadOS 15. To read about that experience with a phone that’s arguably better than mine (4GB of RAM vs 3GB) just sounds insane to me.

Agreed. However I’m paying for monthly Apple Care. Apple won’t do a “free” genuine battery until it drops below 80%. Which I think is ludicrous given the performance of the device. 😠

I assume you no longer have AppleCare+, or do you? If you are willing to pay for the battery replacement at Apple, you can certainly get it replaced before battery health goes below 80%. I did it just several months ago. I have an iPhone 12 Pro and its batter life was around 83% or so. I was going on a long trip that would involve lots of photography in the day time and wanted to make sure I have full battery capacity. Went to my Apple Store and requested battery replacement and they did it.

If you intend to use an AppleCare+ plan, then indeed they will not replace the battery under that plan until battery health is below 80%.

Edit: Oh, just saw your post that you are using your AppleCare plan. Yup, in that case, no dice. Can't replace until below 80% and I think that's written somewhere in the policy or at least it's pretty widely known, though if you didn't know it, you didn't know it.

I would just pay for the replacement at Apple. I was having similar issues with my X two years ago when my battery was showing 82% but I insisted they replace it ($79+tax.) The phone returned to normal performance and battery life and I ended up keeping the X (almost 6 years use out of it) until I finally upgraded to the 15PM.. Your XS is more than capable of giving you a couple more years of life if that's what you desire..

Just to confirm I have no such problems with my XS (battery capacity 97%). This is a newish XS. Apple broke my old one when replacing the battery of my original XS.

Edit: I am on the iOS 17.2 beta
