Hi,

My iPhone XS went into DFU and was in a loop of recovery/update with the error "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4013)" and I was able to trace some other user issues to the earpiece speaker/light sensor so I disconnected it and was able to boot into iOS.

The cable, sensor(s) and speaker visually appear ok. If I reconnect the connector, the phone is in an endless reboot cycle.

I also read that these parts are linked to the motherboard and if I locate Apple genuine parts from a damaged XS, I might get it to boot and have the speaker working but Face ID will not. Is this true?

Is there a repair path for me that doesn't lead back to Apple? They will most assuredly tell me to go @!#?@! myself, politely of course, because I've opened it.

That is true, you won't have Face ID, but will have a working phone. If you can/want, the flood illuminator and ambient light sensor can be transferred over to a new cable to preserve Face ID, if the problem is with the cable and not with said components.

Damn.

Can this be repaired at an Apple store....when stores reopen. Or is this mail in only.

I'd have to install a known good cable/part assembly to narrow down the failure.
It's a backup phone so I am likely to shelve this until Apple reopens and I afford them the delightful opportunity to tell me to go fornicate with myself, as they are so fond of suggesting users do.
