iphone xs max: Face ID not working and Selfie Portrait Keeps Telling me to ‘Move further away’

the screen was changed recently. does the True depth sensor control both Face ID and Selfie Portrait? can i use portrait selfie without True depth sensor?

Did you have the screen replaced by Apple or an authorized Apple repair center? Sounds like whoever replaced the screen caused the issue you are having. Take it back and them fix the issue.

I agree with Taz, it most likely was damaged during the display replacement. Bring it back and show them FaceID and selfie aren't working properly

the phone screen was deeply damaged when it fell so the true depth censor for damaged also

Well you never mentioned the display was severely damaged only that it had been replaced. It's common for FaceID components to be damaged when subjected to severe impacts. Apple or certified apple service providers are the only ones who can repair FaceID components..
