I just realized when im in certain apps. Google maps or phoenix 2 for example, the phone seems to be running in a low power mode when using a low brightness setting on the phone. Try being in google maps with a high brightness settings and moving around. Everythings smooth. Now try turning down your brightness level and you’ll see stuttering.

Same. I’m on iOS 12 beta 4

Never had so many „BUGS“ with an iPhone before like with the iPhone XS (Max)...
Hope that there will be big fixes!

Possibly linked to the PWM screen dimming? Bands of pixels will be turned off across a few screen refresh cycles to reduce the brightness - could cause an effect similar to lagging?

Trying to figure out if its device related or an ios 12 thing. Anyone else? Btw please report it as a bug to apple

XS Max on iOS 12 beta 4 and I've never seen this. I sometimes dim my screen all the way to the lowest setting when I use it before bed. Lol
Is it smooth when doing as i said in google maps. Comparing it with low and a high brightness setting?

I got some choppiness when I first launched the app, but it smoothed out once the map loaded and showed up. There wasn't any performance changes when I changed the brightness. Smooth sailing.

Can you screen record it? Im finding many others seeing it as well. Maybe some people are not as sensitive to it and have a harder time seeing it.

Are you seeing the stutter when you physically move your location and the map updates or just when navigating within different sections of the app?

When you move around the map. Try doing circles and you’ll see choppy framerates

Hi! Finally, this is the second thread of this issue. This bug started with iPhone X on iOS 11.0. I first had it with Clash Royale, it was stuttering with zero brightness, Google Maps does the same. Interesting fact: If you start screen recording, the stuttering will stop and it ll be smooth again. On my XS Max, its the same. It is an iOS bug, you are not alone. I also did a clean reinstall, but it is still the same.

Those who dont experience it, close the affected app like Google maps, set brightness to high, open GMaps but dont do anything, set brightness to zero, and do circles in the map - 25fps.

That actually did it. I screen recorded and couldn’t see anything. But lowering the brightness and looking at it in the sunlight I saw the really bad frame rate. Even after increasing the brightness it still took a few seconds to get back to a usable state.

Ya. I really think its an ios bug affecting everyone just some people arent really sensitive to lower framerates/dont notice it. This bug is a big deal imo. Since i do think the lower brightness is affecting the device performance in the ios as a whole and not just in certain apps when using low brightness

This laggy mess with these apps started with iOS 10, where for example in Clash Royale, you had your finger on the screen and you were scrolling, it was laggy, but as soon as you released your finger, it became smooth. They sort of fixed it in 10.3, but there were still micro lags. Now in 11, it is back, and on X, Xs, Xs Max, we have this brightness “feature”.

iOS 12.1 beta 4 no stutter here
Low brightness no stutter here

iPhone XSM..

(really this seems like that nano"stutter" nitpicking again we had pretty bad with a certain few users a while back..)

Nah its just some people dont notice it and others do. I know people who cant tell low framerate on games as well

Issue still in iOS 12.1.1 also. Apple actually told me it was defective hardware and immediately replaced my device. The new one does it too.... I'm surprised every XS/XS Max has this issue and there are virtually no complaints about this?

It’s not a widely known issue. I actually didn’t even notice it until I was shown the exact steps to take to reproduce it.

Kind of like the text tones that randomly stop working for no reason at all. A bunch of small issues that apple doesn’t care enough to fix.

Was in contact with apple support for like 3 weeks sending information back and forth several calls later i basically get told the engineers say its expected behavior when theres lots of data in the app lol. They had me send a video of it and a bunch of diagnostics

I have also this stutter/ frame rate drop/ not smooth/ choppy when scrolling especially when i’m scrolling on Spotify library lists, Youtube comment section, even in App store. Though at first scroll it is smooth but in split second it shows stuttering. So annoying, i chatted the apple support about this 3 times already.
