iPhone Xs Max won't reconnect to verizon

I ride the subway to and from work every day. I lose service in between stations. Fit some reason, this phone will not automatically get cell service back. I'll get to toggle tht phone in and out of airplane mode to get service again. This happens to my wife's Xs regular, too

Is this a known issue?

My issues aren't that it's connecting and slow...

my issues are that they lose connectivity and never reconnect until i toggle airplane mode.

12.1 doesn't fix this, apparently, since i'm still experiencing this issue.
