Hi all,

yesterday the touchscreen on my iPhone XS became irresponsive. Without any apparent reason like a drop or anything. The screen would still turn on, but not react to any touch input. Hard resets didn't help.

Today the screen started showing a purple line on the left side (see attached image), sometimes also multiple purple lines and flickering.

Now it seems I either need a) a new screen or b) a replacement phone. The two options are actually not that far apart cost wise  , but I would still prefer to just get a new screen installed. However, I've read that sometimes these issues are actually caused by a problem with the circuit board and a new screen wouldn't help.

Is there any way I can narrow that down in advance?

Many thanks
f

Yeah, it's a common issue with those. The XS is a great phone but IMO I'd upgrade out of it if the cost is around the same. Try and sell this one and see if you can subsidize it a bit

The line on the display is a tell tale sign of a display failure.. Whether it's worth the cost of replacement or not is something you need to decide. If the battery health is below 90% you may consider a battery replacement as well since the screen replacement would be a perfect time to replace an old battery as well.

Have you taken this to Apple to diagnose? That would be my first step...

That's a bit complicated at the moment due to Covid restrictions, although it should become easier in the coming week(s). I will try their chat support though.

Thanks! I was planning to upgrade to the 13 Pro anyway later this year, but need a working phone to bridge the remaining 4-5 months. That's either a screen replacement for ca 300€ or a refurbished phone for ca 350€. The one thing I'd like to avoid is paying for a screen replacement, only to find out it was a hardware failure on the logic board and still having to pay for the refurbished phone ;)

So, here's the conclusion:
The official Apple Service partner tells me it's 99.99% just the display. However, because the touchscreen is not responsive and the device not usable at the moment, Apple doesn't allow a screen replacement, only a device replacement for a mere 590€ o_O

Obviously that means I'll get the refurbished one, which also comes with 3y warranty.

Oh and 1/10 for Apple in customer and environmental friendliness...

I would order this oled display and do it yourself. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing the process.. Make sure you get the oled not lcd
