I am using an iPhone 7 with iOS 11 and I am having a lot of battery problems. They are similar to the ones I would get on my iphone 6, which needed a replacement battery. I contacted support and the ran diagnostics, but said it looked fine.

My phone, even with all apps closed, loses about 50% power in 3 hours, when I only have it on the home screen for about 50% of that time, and otherwise sleeping. Sometimes when I turn the phone off and back on, it jumps back up about 2-5%. The only thing that ever stops it from dying is airplane mode.

It also charges very fast. If it is on 3% and I plug it in, it jumps to 7% in less than 30 seconds.

The brightness is normally below 50%.
I am normally connected to cell data because the wifi at my college won't connect to phones.
I only ever have about 3 apps open at once. Youtube, a small game, and Safari.
I do not have low power mode switch on in settings, but I use it through the control panel.
Auto Lock is off

Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions to fix it?

The symptoms sound like a bad battery. To be certain, use a battery utility, such as [http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/|coconutBattery] (for Mac) or [http://www.3u.com/|3uTools] (for Windows). It will tell you what the health of the battery is. Anything less than 70% of design capacity will require replacement.

If the battery is fine, then you may have a module (camera, sensor etc.) that is partially defective and causing a excessive battery drain. This will require some troubleshooting though and usually requires access to known-good parts. A repair shop should be able to help with this.

If you are using YouTube, playing a game, and don’t lock your phone as soon as you are done with it (no auto lock I see) then what you are experiencing may be normal.

Having the display on for a long time, even if you aren’t watching YouTube or playing games, will result in significant battery drain.

Also, it sounds like your battery may need to be calibrated. To do this, let your battery drain all the way until your phone turns off. Then plug it in and let it charge uninterrupted to 100%. Leave the phone plugged in for another hour after it says 100%, then unplug.

Totally agree with this. You should definitely turn auto-lock on. Playing games and watching YouTube videos are both significant battery drainers, so I'm not all that surprised by how quickly your iPhone's battery is dying.

I also recommend taking a look at the tips in this iPhone battery life article. You may want to look at your Background App Refresh, Location Services, and Mail settings to make sure they are optimized.

Hey you know with mail...I use gmail and the apple mail app.

I read its better to set mail to manual rather than push mail which drains the battery....
How do you do turn push off and set mail to manually update?

Also does gmail have the option to set it to manual rather than push which is constantly working in the background and can potentially drain the battery.

The main battery drain is due to not locking your device either pressing power or let it auto-lock which cause the device to use more power to keep the screen on and bright. Default auto-Lock is 30 seconds so the device if it remains idle the screen will dim then the display will turn off after 30 sec to conserve battery which it just goes into standby and screen will lit up only when there is a notification. Also, apps aren't meant to constantly be closed out. Apple recommends to keep them in background but suspended. Every time you close an app, when you re-launch it in the future, the system needs to load it up again and store into memory which consume more power than resuming the app from background. Phone screen isn't meant to kept on like a monitor and turn off when you don't need it. Depends on your cellular coverage there, if you have 1 signal bar, it will consume a little more power for the modem to keep searching for a better signal. YouTube and games will drain your battery more so its reasonable for your battery drain. If you have background refresh, I recommend to turn it off as well and it does make a difference. Using auto-brightness might help and you can manually adjust it. If your battery keeps draining that fast and keep recharging, it will stress the battery causing it age quicker and it will eventually degrade over time.

Was the discussion that we had about this earlier at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/what’s-your-battery-capacity.2112507/page-7#post-26000966 not helpful when it came to all of that?

No I am bit confused whether to set it to 'fetch' or 'manual'

Thanks for that
I didn't even know that!
So what is a reasonable time for auto lock? 3 minutes?

Fetch will get it at particular intervals while manual will check only when you launch the mail app or manually refresh it.

As for auto-lock, it's whatever more convenient for you. Generally people have it at a minute I'd say.
