A friend of mine has recently moved to HK and it occured to me that as the iPhone is sold unlocked direct from Apple (http://store.apple.com/hk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=NzcwNjc0NQ), he could get one and send it over to me in Europe (esp. as postage is so ridiculously cheap).

The only thing I wanted to ask is whether it would need to be activated in HK or whether I can activate it here? Apple only says "activate with any network" but doesn't specify whether they mean any network anywhere or only in HK.

Does anybody out there know the score?

Thanks! :)

don't worry, as it has no network lock , you can activate it in any where. To activate it, you only need to put in a valid SIM and then plug the USB cable into your computer with Itunes

I have a question about these Apple factory unlocked iPhones. Once it is activated with any sim card, and let's say, I travel to another country, can I just put in the sim card of that country's gsm network and it will still work?

I believe so, yes :)

Thanks for the info.

Another question, if anybody knows - are things shipped from HK liable to give me issues with customs (i.e. VAT)?

Can it be sent "as a gift"?

my Advice

be Careful yes China is where the Iphone is made but also where 99% of all fake termed Hiphones are made and there are some decent fakes if you don't know what you are looking for. also make sure it has Wifi since China frowns on it. I love to visit China someday! :D i'm 6'2' so I could see down the crowded street pretty easily. :p oh remember too most the iphone cases come from China so he should find sweet deals on all kind of Iphone accessory's. I don't think it be a problem to ship from there but I would ask about taxes and things do it legit and get insurance in case it get lost in transit.

Remember: You have to sync it with iTunes again and you must have an active internet connection on that computer. :)

yeah it will work, any sim card put in and a top up placed and it will be activated
