iPhone's safari never saves password?

Autofill button does nothing, it is there to taunt you. Also, autofill has a mind of it's own. It works on some sites. but not on others. 
This seems to be a feature 
thought would be useful but has become useless I have found that once you first visit a site and check the box remember username and pass word only then a pop up comes up asking if you would to save the password for this site.My understand is you should be able to tap autofill and it pulls info from contacts.
