Updating to the latest software can sometimes be good and bad. The good is that you get any new features that are introduced as well as any security updates and bug fixes. The bad is that sometimes updates fix some bugs but at the same time cause new ones. Some people like to wait to hear from others that have installed the latest update to see if it’s “safe” to update, meaning that there aren’t any bugs causing serious issues that make the device difficult to use.

In iOS 11.3, Apple introduced a battery health section in settings that allows you to see the current percentage of your battery’s overall health. Once your battery gets to a point where it can’t support peak performance, your device may experience unexpected shutdowns. In this case, Apple gives you the option to throttle performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns. Ultimately though, at this point the battery should be replaced.

Keeping aside the battery controversy, in general Apple's engineers also choose not to optimize newer OS releases on older hardware, maybe in order to nudge up new sales. Thus you will notice that your device slows down if you update.

That is a good point, but I believe Apple isn’t the only company that does this. It would be nice for everything to run as smooth as it does from day one until it literally dies, but at the end of the day, whether a person thinks very highly of Apple or hates them, business is business, and all businesses want to make money.
