iPhoneX - how to keep apps open when switching

I have a problem haven’t seen yet on threads...when I switch between apps on iPhoneX, 90% of the time when i go back to a previous app it restarts. Terrible when playing games! For example if I’m in the middle of say candy crush or a game of backgammon then switch apps to write a text message or take a picture, when i go back to my game the app has closed and restarts.

Help?

Which app switcher are you using.. swipe up and hold or the swipe the navigation bar sideways. The navigation bar is set up to move info from one app to another so may be the better option.
