iPhoto 05 image optimization - DESPERATE!

Hi,

I have almost 900 pictures that I carefully divided up into 30 galleries. I then gave each one of them a descriptive title. A LOT of work. Now I want to used the Iphoto Export to make them into Simpleviewer galleries, but the files needs to be downsized first (as the IPhoto Export does not do that very well).

Any thoughts on how to optimize the different images for dimentions and kb size without messing up all my galleries and my descriptive titles?

Why don't you export all the photos from each of your 30 galleries into 30 individual folders (a single folder for each gallery). Then use AUTOMATOR, select all the photos in one folder, and resize them. Next, select another folder and resize them. Continue doing so until all the photos in each of your 30 folders is resized to your liking.

I know what you mean. I hate the fact that a 640x480 image can be 600kB in size in iPhoto, yet in Photoshop or any other software you can compress a JPEG to 70kB with good enough image quality.

Yup, I like iPhoto for its convenience, but it stops way short of the more expensive apps (go figure). The only reason why I am using iPhoto for this taks is that I am also using the iPhoto Export script to create Simpleviewer files. At some point, I hope that the script will be adapted so that one can use any app, say PS, to do the same.

I think you've answered your own question. You will need to use some software other than iPhoto it you want finer control over how the jpg is created.

Within iPhoto you can try this.
1) Duplicate the images.
2) Put the duplicate is another album or "film roll" and call it XXX-downsized
or whatever
3) re-size all the duplicated images

If you like the "within iPhoto" method but still want to use another program to do the actuall resizing then make that progtram the default editor and go into the editor for each photo and resize it there, This would be a lot of work but it does evrything you asked for

I like 'Gimp". and use it as my default editor in iPhoto. It's free and has a feature set midway between Photoshop CS and Elements. www.gimp.org

One other option:

If you get a copy of netpbm ( http://netpbm.sourceforge.net/ ) it will be very easy to write a shell script to convert and entire directory tree of graphic files. One nice thing about netpbm is that it has been around so long, 20+ years at least that (I quote fromthe web site) "...There is no bug tracking system because there aren't enough bug reports to make it worthwhile..."
