Hello... i was just wondering if anyone noticed any speed gains from iphoto 05? Im runnin iphoto 05 on a 2005 g4 ibook and on certain occasions... its reallllllllyyy dog slow.

Just trying to test whether Steve's "phenomenal" gain in speed as a result from being "built ground up - again!" was really true!

I'm quite impressed with many parts of iPhoto 6, not the least of which is speed. I did a quick test before/after installation. I clicked on the application icon in my dock with no other applications running. It took about 18 seconds to open and load my ~5000 photos and settle down so I could scroll. After installing iPhoto 6, I did the same test and (after the initial startup requiring reconfiguring the files), the startup time was about 8 seconds. So, I'm seeing startup times about twice as fast.

Other than that, I think the scrolling is definitely better.

The full screen editing is really cool too.

I just installed iLife '06 on my 2004 1.2GHz 12" iBook and it runs like a hot knife through butter. Sooooo much faster than iPhoto 5, launches in 2 bounces of the dock icon and my nearly 5000 photos are there in about 5 seconds.

Full screen editing and the effects pane are fantastic, the calendars look good and it is possible to save them as a pdf so we who can't order iPhoto prints can get them printed.

I have set mine to display 7 photos per row and scrolling through them is like scrolling through a text document - tiny, if any delays when scrolling, opening a photo for editing takes no time at all. It closes the program almost instantly - much faster than it took to close iPhoto 5.

Overall I am very happy with iPhoto 6.

EDIT: With a close and subsequent restart of iPhoto 6, the app opened within one dock bounce and the whole program was ready to go within 5 seconds - awesome!!!

Heheh.... hot knife thru butter!

Great to know speed gains were noticeable... all the more reasons for me to upgrade!!

And even better, the generic slideshow music is now a sort of acoustic guitar picking - far more upbeat than the old classical music. It's from the GarageBand example songs.

I didn't notice a particularly big improvement between iPhoto '04, and iPhoto '05 in terms of features or speed. However, iPhoto '06 is a big improvement on both counts. Where iPhoto '05 was annoying sluggish at times on my PowerBook, '06 is really fast. It launches faster, and most importantly, it scrolls faster and the UI is all around much more responsive. Besides the speed improvements, the full screen editing mode and one-click effects are quite well done. I'm glad I sprung for the upgrade.
