I'm sure that I'm not the first to find or post this but I wanted to get it out there for anyone who doesn't know about this trick.
Once in edit mode in iPhoto 5 you can drastically improve the performance of loading the next (and prev) images if you keep the current image all the way over to the left in the top thumbnail view of pictures. For example, if you are editing the picture that is all the way over on the right and then you click the right arrow button at the bottom to go to the next picture you will get a long delay for that picture to be loaded. But, if you move the last thumbnail all the way over to the left by clicking the scroll arrow in the thumbnail viewer and then you click the large next button below the image loads instantly!
I hope I explained that well enough...probably not. But try it. It doesn't work 100% of the time but it works most of the time.
