Not sure where to put this actually!!
Having watched the keynote I wonder how are we supposed to transfer the photos modified and edited on the ipad or iphone back to the mac where all our photos are stored in iphoto for MacOSX.

Remember than with ios 5.0 came features in the ios photo app, like managing photo albums directly on the iphone itself that DID NOT sync back to the iphoto application on the mac, so those edits and albums were pretty much iphone/ipad only.

is this the case with iphoto for ios?
how do you transfer photos/albums back to the mac?
do you lose the original unedited photos?
do you lose the flagged photos?

For your question about transferring them back to the Mac, couldn't you just sync them with iPhoto on the Mac?

The app iPhoto just downloaded into my iPhone 4 ... WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!! Waiting for it to install on my iPad 2.

Spectacular interface! Touch a photo and you have TOTAL information on the specific photo - everything you need to make use of your iDevice photos at a pro level!! OUTSTANDING BONUS!!!!!!!

And you can't help but notice how GREAT your photos look - brilliant colors, sharp focus! WOW!!!

--------

Edit: After reading the rest of this thread, I realized my comments are not on the iPhoto sync issue. I started another thread on the Apple app iPhoto. Although it's an app, it is actually an extension of iOS5.1... and what an extension!!!!

I'm also really curious about the logistics behind it all. Will iPhoto on iOS sync specifically chosen albums/events from your Mac? Then will changes made sync in both directions?

I really wish iPhoto could be stored on a storage device like a time capsule or NAS that allowed multiple devices (Mac, iPad, Apple TV) to access the library simultaneously.

Theres no such thing as sync which iPhoto in the Mac.
When you connect your iPhone vía USB and load iPhoto for mac, all it does is look at the DCIM folder in the iOS device.

Things like managed albums on ios are not stored within this DCIM folder so those changes are never synced or copied over the mac.

Thus why I wonder if apple has done something different thus time or whether the divide between iOS and mac is even greater this time. It just feels like half baked ideas caused by lack of inter communication between the mac and iOS teams.

Or even better.. An iPhoto in the cloud just like they did with iTunes.
Thanks to iTunes in the cloud and iTunes match I now have two computers each with a different sub portion of my iTunes library. No need to download the whole library in each computer, but all is kept in sync between computers and devices.

Yeah, I've felt at times like I've wanted that, centralized place for keeping my photos in the cloud. But I think they're just relying on photostream for that use.. And photo libraries can grow quite large in size so probably wouldn't be too easy to keep them all cloud based.

Been playing with the app on the phone and it's extremely well done. But it feels like a major disconnect with iPhoto from the Mac. I'll have to go into iTunes and select events/albums to copy to the iDevice and then wonder if they'll sync back? I dunno..

Anyone with initial reports on how it works with Aperture?

I would guess it works as much as iPhoto for mac, i.e. doesn't work at all.
Basically there's a "gap" or disconnection between iPhoto for Mac and iPhoto/Photos for iOS devices. I guess it will probably be fixed in the next version of iLife for mac, but for now this is just a pain in the a$$.

Yep I was right.. those photos you modify on the iOS device are not there when you connect it through USB to iPhoto on the mac. the iPhoto for mac only sees those photos on the iOS main photo roll.. not modified, created, or edited photos. So no retouched, tagged, edited, enhanced photos are copied back to the mac.

Seriously.. I hope this is solved in the new iPhoto for Mac.

We need to be able to sync Events directly from iPhoto/Aperture to iOS devices. (Then in turn any changes sync back.)
Rather than through the tab in iTunes. Or iTunes could probably do this if they wanted to keep it all within iTunes. But with wireless syncing now, I'd like to see the ability to sync directly with iPhoto and Aperture.

(Really hope they don't leave out Aperture!)

You can share the photos to iTunes which would then make them through the app sharing panel.
It's not ideal because it then requires further work to get the photos back into iPhoto
Ideally, I'd like to see edited photos added back into Photostream so they could be picked up that way

Edit to add - I've just noticed that if you save the edited photos back to the camera roll they do get added back into the photostream so you can get them back into iPhoto that way. It's still not ideal as they come in as new photos but it's better than nothing I guess

it's not ideal at all, since you lose descriptions, flagged status, plus the originals are lost too.

It's no better than emailing copies of the photos to yourself or using dropbox, really. You get the files and need to add them in iPhoto/Mac or you can copy the photos on the iOS device from iPhoto/iOS to the iOS photo roll, then import them into iPhoto/Mac using the USB cable.

All a hassle that I would expect from a half-baked windows solution, not from Apple, really.

Thanks for all the information everyone is providing. I don't have an iPad but have the new iPad on order and am expecting it on Friday. I was really eager to try out the new iPhoto app to quickly edit my photos while sitting on the couch or at a cafe, and then sync them either to iPhoto or Aperture on my iMac. But alas, it looks like I won't be able to do that.

I assume (hope?) that this will be addressed in the next version of iLife, which I expect will be released alongside Mountain Lion. But it seems like a REALLY glaring problem and a huge omission. Seeing as you can't use an iOS device without tying it to a computer, it seems dumb to not create a way for iOS apps to sync with their OS X counterparts. What's the point of using iPhoto for the iPad then?

If Apple isn't going to give iOS an accessible file system, then they need to allow the iOS versions of iPhoto, iMovie, etc. sync with the OS X versions. The current implementation seems so un-Apple like.

You can since the update to iOS 5.1.

Yes, you are correct. I forgot about that.

My main point, though, is that the iPad isn't a full-fledged computer substitute yet (although for some users it may effectively work as such), and that for most people it is an extension of their computer in many ways. As such, what you do on the iPad should sync much more robustly with your computer(s). I think Apple is working out the kinks in their iCloud implementation, but there are such glaring issues so far that it makes me wonder what went wrong during the design process.

Yeah the integration with your larger library is a little unintuitive isn't it.

Other than that, it's a very well done app. Give me exposure brushes, brush size and strength options and we're in serious business. And I've only played with it on my iPhone so far.

Back to integration though, like the rest of you I'm sensing an imminent update to desktop iPhoto to really bring this up to speed. Actually, this update may be rather significant, considering that the brush / colour / preset controls on the iOS version make it a more powerful editor than its desktop counterpart.

And then there's Aperture of course. I'm really curious to see what their strategy is going to be for all this stuff.

I don't want to open another thread, but does anyone know how to recovered delete photos? I was in edit mode and I accidentally pressed the 'x' button and it deleted my photo from iPhoto, but you can still access the photo in the Camera Roll.

I think iPhoto will replace the Stock "Photos" app. There isn't any need for it now we have iPhoto.

Also I think iPhoto will be backed up via iCloud and i don't just mean photostream. All Events etc will be mirrored on you iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch etc.

I can only dream :)

iPhone or iPad?

On the iPad with the correct folder open and the grid icon seleceted (looks like a tic-tac-toe board) press the triangle pointing down in the top left corner. Choose hidden and you should see your missing picture. Press the x again to print it back.

It is similar on the iPhone only it has to be in the landscape mode.

You sir, are the best. Thank you so much. I am playing it on my 4S, haven't installed it on my iPad yet.
