iPhoto help needed please

I need to take a digital image that was emailed to me in a vertical orientation and figure out how to switch it to horizontal. I thought iPhoto would have a quick click to do this but I cannot figure it out. I can get it to switch to horizontal but then the person in the image is sideways. I try to crop but it just trims the picture and resizes it. I do not know how to get the image to be in the needed horizontal orientation.

I am no pro by any stretch just volunteered to design a pictorial directory and most pics were taken by a photo company but for any military or shut ins they were allowed to submit their photo and one person submitted in a vertical format despite our instructions.

go to the top and click image then click rotate. Is that what you are trying to do?

If rotation doesn't do it, use crop and change the orientation to landscape.

When I do the rotate, it flips to the horizontal orientation the person's body is sideways I tired uploading a SS of it but it says file is too large.

You can open the image up in Preview - Click Tools - Rotate. Then Click File - Save


You can do a lot of quick edits in Preview like crop and rotate and write on the image.

You need to crop to a horizontal format, you can do that in Preview from the Tools menu or via the Cmd-K shortcut.

Rotating it will rotate the entire image. If you need a landscape image shape from a portrait (upright) original then you have to crop the top and bottom off to leave you the middle section. That substantially alters the image though so I hope you and the photographer are happy with the result.

It maybe easier to have the photographer resubmit the required image unless there is some reason not to.

This is plain geometry (probably also plane geometry).

Trimming the picture and resizing is exactly what cropping is supposed to do.

With basic image organizing/editing apps like iPhoto or Photos, you can't make a vertical (portrait orientation) image wider than it currently is - you can only remove material from the top and/or bottom until it becomes a horizontal rectangle.

An app like iPhoto is not designed for adding new material to an image - it can only work with the material you have. If you need to add more to the sides of an image than is present, you need a graphic arts application that can clone sections of an image, bring in sections of another image, etc. That would mean something like Photoshop.
