I just opened iPhoto for the first time in my MacBook Pro. It said it needed to "upgrade" to use my old library, which of course I said it was ok. But now I find that all my photos are now organized by "rolls" instead of by date in my folders. It used to be that my photos were stored under different month and different date, based on when the photo was taken (not when it was imported). Now all my past photos are converted to "rolls". It's almost impossible to look anything up if I want to upload photos on the web for, let's say, ebay. Is there a way to adjust this without renaming all the rolls?? Thanks!

Sorry, I don't mean sorting pictures when I'm actually in iPhoto. I mean how the photos are actually organized within folders. Let's say in my cameras I have photos that were taken on Jan 1, Feb 12 and Mar 1. Let's say I just downloaded them today, on Mar 4. Those photos used to be saved in three separate folders 2005>01>01, 2005>02>12 and 2005>03>01 within my iPhoto folder. The way they are organized now, they are all downloaded into 2005>03>Roll # regardless of when the photos were taken. Not only that, all my old photos were reorganized into various rolls. So if I'm ftp-ing to the web (not from iPhoto) and look for photos by folders, it's very difficult to find anything. Hope my description is a bit clearer...

Ah, sorry Well, I'm not sure how useful it is, but there's an check box to choose whether to add a file to the library when adding a picture to iPhoto, implying you can potentially keep the actual files how you like and where you like. It might be more work than it's worth reorganising your database and then reimporting though, especially if it means you'll lose changes.

Not sure if that would help. I think I figured out that going forward, I can subdivide a roll according to the dates they were taken and then rename the rolls. Thanks for your help!

I'm really not sure about your proposed solution if you're talking about doing it in the Finder. Doing anything in the Finder outside of iPhoto that changes iPhoto's structure generally blows up your Library. Creating extra rolls in your Library within iPhoto and moving the pictures into them should be OK though.

Apple made iPhoto 6 folders revert to rollnames since for most people that made more sense than individual days that, based on the number of questions here about it, very few people could figure out - or necessarily remember on which day of a vacation, they took which picture.
