The search I did for this returned an overwhelming number of results, so I decided to start a new thread.

My question is, is it at all possible to have my iPhoto library located on an external harddrive?

Yes, you have a couple different options:

1) create a normal iPhoto library, move it to the external drive, and hold down the option key every time you start iPhoto to select which library you want to use
2) download a program like iPhoto Buddy or iPhoto Library Manager to let you switch between multiple libraries (which you may put anywhere on the internal or external drive), then just run this program instead of iPhoto - you can select your library and it will launch iPhoto for you.

I prefer option #2 myself.

Thanks, alex_ant!

I'll go with option 2 as well.

I've got two iPhoto Libraries on my PB (I doubt that there's any way to really merge them :(), and I don't recall having to hold down option any time other than when I switch between them.

iPhoto Buddy is indeed incredible. I could now transfer my photo library to an external drive. Thanks alex_ant for sharing!
