iPhoto photo import

My wife and I just got out first Mac (iMac 17" 1.8) and let me tell you.... I LOVE IT! However, I ran accross something my wife may not be too hot on. With our Windows based computer, she used to make a small text file in each picture directory with information on who is in each picture. (It's the geneologist in here!) However, with iPhoto it imports all the photos into its own directory structure. Is there someway I can set up iPhoto NOT to import the pictures into its own folder stucture so my wifes system can still be usefull? Personally, I couldn't care less about the text file but I know it matters to her.

iPhoto allows you to make notes on each photo within the iPhoto application.

Would that suffice?

Yes and no. Is there anyway to PRINT those comments? Because i dont think those comments follow the file everywhere it goes. My wife is conserned that in 70 years when people look back at the pictures they wont knwo who they are,

So long as you use iPhoto to 'share' those images by email, web, disc etc, you have the option to share the iPhoto title and comments alongside them.

There's also an Automator action somewhere on Apple's site that can take all the iPhoto comments and paste them into the Spotlight data field on the files so that it's held in the metadata; so even if your iPhoto corrupts, you'd still have the comments. It doesn't work with keywords I don't think but comments are fine.

Being a recent Mac convert myself, I hear you. I'm not a big fan of the iphoto directory structure either. What I do is stay away from letting iphoto import the pics initially. I manually move them over via the finder, and organize them in subfolders as I wish within the pictures directory (simply keeps things tidy). Then, I import them into iphoto as necessary, even though iphoto still copies them into it's own dir structure. I tend to use the preview app for viewing individual pix, and iphoto for creating slideshows and such. Preview can even do some general editing now, so it works out great while allowing me to keep tabs on the images how I want to. I'm sure you could add text files that way, just as you would if you copied the pics into your 'my pictures' folder in windows.

I've not used it, but the shareware program Shoebox ($30?) is similar to iPhoto but keeps normal directory folders as you do.

Who's to say that in 70 years the types of file formats and OS we use won't be entirely obsolete? If she's looking that far into the future, her better bet is to have prints, write on the back, and store them in quality photo albums.

Also, the suggestion about putting the comments in the Spotlight Comments section is good.
