Ah! iPhoto 6.0.4 is acting up, and I have no idea what is wrong! Instead of displaying thumbnails of my pictures, it shows squares of dashed lines. The strange thing is that, if I scroll quickly up or down, I can see the pictures for a very short time before they are replaced with the dashed squares. I can, however, view the pictures in slideshows without a problem. What is wrong, and how can it be fixed? I also have trouble with iPhoto in System Preferences--I can use albums as screensavers, but I cannot browse my iPhoto library to select desktop pctures or use entire albums as my desktop. Additionally, I can see file names in the iMovie media-browser, but again I cannot see thumbnails. Please help!

Close out of iPhoto and then go to your pictures folder and then double click on iPhoto Library. In there you should see some files that say something like ThumbJPGSegment.data and 2 others. Take those files and move it out of your iPhoto Library folder and place it on the desktop for temporary backup. Then launch iPhoto and it should recreate the thumbnail database. If it doesn't quite iPhoto and go back into it.

You might try rebuilding the library by holding down the option key as you start up iPhoto. This could resolve your thumbnail issue.

Alternatively, try moving the .plist file to the desktop and starting up iPhoto to build a new preferences file.

The pertinant file is com.apple.iPhoto.plist and should be in your ~/Library/Preferences folder

Thank you. All of the problems are now resolved. I moved my entire library to the desktop and re-imported everything.

iPhoto not displaying thumbnails.

Hi I'm still seeing the same issue. I tried doing the things that were suggested and none of it worked. For example, on my mac there is no "com.apple.iphoto.plist. Can someone please help me out. I just bought this mac book pro about a month and a half ago. I don't know what to do. Thanks for your help.

I don't know if it will help, and it took a little while, but re-importing every photo from the desktop isn't as painful as it might sound. It took me only about fifteen minutes (for 2600 photos). As a recovering Windows user, I consider a quarter-hour to be next to nothing. It's been a while since I re-imported now, and iPhoto is working just fine. I can even get to my library through the desktop picture-window and through the other iLife applications.

have you done a spotlight search for the file com.apple.iphoto.plist?
It should be there.
