iPhoto question on iMAC2011

Hi all,

3 quick questions:

1. On iPhoto, if I make any changes to a photo, does a new photo get saved? Or does it save on top of the existing photo?

2. I know that I can get to the iphoto folder in Finder by showing "Package Contents" but the way the photos are presented in the folders are quite confusing and not intuitive. I was told not to tamper with these folders as it can corrupt iphoto. But may I ask why such a bad layout within the folders?

3. Do you guys really think that Aperture is a lot better than iphoto? I am still undecided on a photo editting software. I don't plan on doing heavy editing. But I do want something that can work with RAW and to fix exposures, etc. So far, I think iPhoto already does all that. But any comments would be welcome.

iPhoto automatically keeps your original photos.

Yep don't screw with the folder structure. And who cares what the structure is if you aren't supposed to mess with it and when you are supposed to use iPhoto as your photo interface?

The folder structure though seems logical to me. Organizes my photos around year then event names.

It gets more tangled when there is an Original and Modified folder.

The only reason to worry about folder organization is when you want to transfer your photos to another program. Then it might take some work. But there is an export option.

Aperture is a more professional program. You can easily transfer your iphoto library to Aperture so ....hold on to your armchair.......don't get ahead of yourself. Use iphoto and see if it meets your needs first.

My feeling is iPHoto is fine for you. Someone that needs Aperture knows they need Aperture.

Thank you. So if I delete photos in iPHoto, the whole image disappears from my iMac, period. In other words, deleting unwanted photos will save disk space and not cause pics to still be in some hidden folder, correct?

The iMac is great, but the biggest learning curve is dealing with everything saved in proprietary programs.

Deleted photos go into IPhoto trashcan. Empty iPhoto trashcan to permanently remove them.

Just think of iPhoto as the Finder or Windows Explorer for photos.

I guess I will play w/ iPhoto a bit longer to see if I really need Aperture.

If so, I will go ahead and download from the app store. Do we get free updates when Aperture 4 comes out? Or do we probably have to pay full price to upgrade?
