I held on to iPhoto until Catalina, then switched to Photos. I figured it had matured by then. I find Photos to be counterintuitive, painful to use, and buggy, and I want out.
I take photos with a camera but I am not a photographer. I need a nice and intuitive way to organize my images. What I liked most about iPhoto was the "Events" window, which could be displayed in a list with disclosure triangles next to them, so you could see the photos for a given event within the list.
I have looked at a number of photo organizing apps. I like the idea of using the system folder hierarchy for organizing photos, rather than relying on a black box database, but the arrangement of a folder hierarchy in a sidebar is not as intuitive to me. No other program which I have seen uses something like the iPhoto "Event" arrangement.
Another thing which most photo organizers seem to share is their love for dark GUIs. I don't like dark GUIs, including Apple's dark mode.
Besides that, I need solid basic photo editing and good RAW processing. I need good responsiveness and reliability and a clean Mac GUI. I don't need or want color effects, face recognition, AI-based complex photo retouching, or any other incidental gimmicks.
I've looked at DX Photo Pro, which is good except for the GUI, and Picktorial, which feels dumbed-down.
Any suggestions?
