Moving from iPhoto to Aperture. First, wow am I surprised by how much faster moving around the library is in Aperture than in iPhoto on my old 2008 iMac. Shoulda done this years ago...

My intent is to cleanup the mess of extra photos from iPhoto, i.e. the edits made in iPhoto that created a whole new copy photo file.
I pictured reverting to only the original, than recreating any edits I might want in Aperture, think this would shrink my library, plus then I could create stacks of any multiple edits together for organizational purposes. I know this seems like a ton of work, but I don't have a huge amount of edits to deal with, and I want to streamline early.

Prior to starting, here's my problem: I thought that Aperture would either show me the group of edits already in a stack, or would show each edit as a separate pic that I would have to match, but that not what I'm seeing. What I see in Aperture is the last edit I made in iPhoto, with a badge in the corner saying edits have been made. The last part is great because it makes it pretty easy for me to find the pics I need to work on.

But, I'm not sure how to do this now. If I do the revert to original in Aperture, will it delete all the edited copies in iPhoto (which is what I am hoping for), or do I need to do all the work in iPhoto, where the pics are harder to find, and the app just grinds...then go back to Aperture and recreate the few edits I need (mostly crops).

Or is this entirely a moot point, since the libraries for both are merged now? It isn't clear to me if iPhoto changed the way it managed edits after the update to identical libraries with iPhoto 11.

Is what I asking for make sense to anybody?

OK, so doing a little investigation myself... think I found a bug.

I decided to try this using Aperture using a single photo I know had edits in iPhoto, and wrote down some relevant info about pic in case something went wrong.

So, in Aperture I chose the pic and CAREFULLY selected "Delete versions". Photo disappeared entirely from project. So I closed Aperture and opened iPhoto. Pic was missing there as well.

So I did searches for the Pic by name in both iPhoto and Aperture; not found. Not in the Trash in either app. Couldn't "Undo" in Aperture, probably because I had closed it out before opening iPhoto.

Thing is, the picture is still in the library, along with all the edits. I found it using spotlight. The master, the thumbnail and 4 cropped edits. I copied the master to my desktop, thinking I can reimport later once I sort out the mess.

But what do I do about the six existing files neither Aperture or iPhoto seem to know exists anymore? Just delete them? Is there a way to relink them to either app from inside the library?

Is this a bug?

Did you check the trash? Aperture has its own trash folder - nothing will actually leave the aperture library until you empty the trash. And even then, it won't be completely deleted as it'll just go to your system trash.

Alright, I got the lost file squared away and is seems as though the only way to do this thing cleanly is to "Revert to original" in iPhoto, which is too bad because its a lot harder to find the edits in iPhoto than it is in Aperture.
