iPhoto to iPad photo sync - What's the compression ratio?

For those who have synced their entire iPhoto libraries, what's the approximate compression or "optimization" ratio from your computer library to your iPad photos library?

For example, if you've got 20gb of photos on your HD, once iTunes optimizes these, what does that become on the iPad?

Photos will be a major part of what I want to do with the iPad so I'm trying to determine what storage size would be sufficient. I understand there are programs where I can pull info/photos off a networked computer but I want to carry as much as I can on the device itself.

I can't give you an equation, but I have nearly 2000 photos on my iPad taking up about 7-8 gigs of space. Thats coming out of an iPhoto library that is about 30 gigs.

I don't really use iPhoto for cataloging, but I started using it recently to sync the final versions of my best photos with AppleTV and now the iPad. It's a GREAT way to have a portable digital portfolio. And I LOVE the "places" feature... it's worth geotagging your photos for (if your camera doesn't do it automatically).

For example, only sync photos with 3 stars or above rating, while preserving the album structure?

You can make smart albums for 3 stars or above, but preserving the album structure would be key for me. I don't want to have to make 200 smart albums.

You can make smart albums for 3 stars or above, but preserving the album structure would be key for me. I don't want to have to make 200 smart albums.

You can change the way you make albums. Instead of just creating a normal album and dragging photos in, why not spend some time to name, tag, and rate your photos. Then all you have to do is create all your albums as smart albums which meet the criteria you define. The photos will automatically follow your rules.

Sorry, I was being a little unclear in my original post.

What I meant is I wanted to preserve the EVENT structure I have in iPhoto already, but have the iPad sync only the "best of" (say, 3+ star rated photos) each of these events. Essentially, "trimming the fat" for the iPad.

I do usually name/tag/rate my photos as much as I can, but leave them as "EVENTS" and rarely create actual "ALBUMS".

I just checked the smart folder conditions and there is an "Event" option, as well as a "Rating" option with less than/greater than operators. I think you just need to make smart albums and sync those.

Thanks for the info. I guess I wished there was an easier way, since I have about 200+ "events", and "EVENTS" is the way that iPhoto seems to want to organize stuff for you by default.

I think the smart albums will work.

I had completely forgotten the fact that the photos would be compressed somewhat when transferred to iPad...pretty much cemented my decision to 'only' go for the 16Gb model now as photos were really the only thing I was going to store on there (and only selected albums etc).

As long as the event structure is preserved, I'll be happy - i think that's the functionality I'm looking for. thanks for the reply!

So, anyone else with info like this?

It seems that the iPad "optimized" size is 2304x1536. That is, any photos you have larger than this resolution will be scaled downward to reach this dimension.
